Default When behind another car at a stop light,

how far do you let the car in front of you get before you start to accelerate ?

I usually leave a two car gap before I start to accelerate so that I don't have to brake so soon... Just wondering if you all leave a gap too...

I do the same thing in traffic to go easy on my brakes.......I cannot stand the "GO-Stop and GO"........would rather "drive" the car than succumb to the "brake-light driver syndrome"....

Lol, I never thought about this but going from a Prelude to a Z I'm gonna have to chance my habits, especially in situations like this.

I usually leave at least one car length between me and the car IFO me when I'm stopped at a red light. This is an old habit that goes back to my days in LE. I also try to maintain a safe distance between the car when the light changes to green and we take off. It doesn't make sense to tail gate. It's dangerous from a driving POV and you never know what kind of nut is driving the car you are tailgating. Just too many trigger happy fools behind the wheel of a car lately.

Ha...when cars see me coming up behind them they run the light out of fear!! LOL

This time of year it's nice and quiet and I am usually the first car at the light(I also hit every single light!!). During our busy season it's pretty much pointless to try to go any faster than 1/2 the speed limit or be the first-twentieth car in line at a red light.

Wow, you get away with that in Chicago. In the SF Bay Area, if you left a gap bigger than a car length while in traffic you are just asking to get cut off.

At a stop sign, I usually put just enough room so that I can get around him if necessary plus any roll-back I might expect if it's a steep hill.

I have been suprised at the space other drivers give the Z in traffic....can usually see cut off attempts shaping up.....they get the message when I don't want to play!!!

I usually start off really slow at the light until the guy behind me gets pissed and changes lanes to pass me.... then I take off and he can't pass me. I hate impatient people. I NEVER tailgate and nothiing makes me more angry on the road. If you rearend someone it is ALWAYS your fault no matter the circumstances... I leave like 4-5 car lengths in dry weather, more in rain.

I think there are certain rules though when someone cuts in front of you, thereby leaving like 4-5 feet of seperation, the blame goes to that car in front. I heard this from an insurance rep.

Anyhow, I never follow to closely. Even when at the red light, i wait almost a car length behind.

It depends on how fast he/she are going, how fast I feel like driving, and whether or not I think someone's going to cut me off.

At a stop light I always leave enough room to get the heck out and ahead if I have to. (I guess i've heard of too many car jacking incidents.) In traffic I try and leave at least 1.5 - 2 car lengths ahead of me and drive so that I don't hit the brakes. I just cruise it in 1st or second if I can. I hate brake dust.
