It takes more than just horsepower to tell how an exhaust will sound. What trim is your Z? I tought G35's have something like 298HP. I could be wrong though, too lazy to check right now.

the only G35 to my knowledge that have 298hp are the 05 6MT ones, the rest are 280 hp.

I agree. I heard a a G35 today, and the exhaust sounded deeper and richer than my Z Touring Roadster. Subjective, I suppose...

Just My speculations:

A.) G35c generally weighs a little more, needs extra grunt.
Drivers are generally shifting in higher rpms.

B.) Lack of Z-tube difference in intake causing more backpressure of the pipes.

C.) 280 vs 287, lack of the 7 horses = more restrictive airflow pushing more out of the exhaust pipes?

D.) Extra piping due to longer wheel-base

E.) a combination of all of the above

My ex-gf had a g35 coupe automatic and when I drove it I also noticed that the exhaust tone is louder, sounds exactly the same as my Z but just a bit louder and deeper.

The G35 coupe exhaust has a MUCH deeper and noticeable sound than the 350z, both from inside the car and outside. I think it has something to do with the longer piping and bigger exhaust in the back. The Z's really no longer have more hp since the new G35coupe 6MT's (there are a lot) have 298hp. You have to get a Z in Track or 35th 6speed to get the 300hp...

But anyway, all the 280hp versions of G35coupes (03-04) still sound deeper and better in my opinion. Finally, louder doesn't mean better. If you check out the M3 exhaust tone, you'll see that it is way quieter... But the doesn't mean it has less HP.
