I started coming here around July maybe? Not until 3 min. ago did I notice the points under everyone's handle. What do they mean?

I'm known for never noticing things, but MAN.

 

I know you can get them by rating a persons post either positive or negative, and you get or lose a point.

however I assume points come from other places, since I doubt that many people vote that the point totals get that high.

as for their use, you can spend them to get stuff, like the highlighted name(see mine), change your name, change your description under your name(or someone elses), and lose your warnings.

The points are what have brought this site down to meaningless posts about nothing just so they can get points.

The way it's set up, those with a huge number of points are the ones who start the most threads. It's not a very good indication of value though, because at least half the threads are just silly. Points would only be meaningful if they were pure ratings.
