Did anyone's Z come with license plate screws for the rear? Mine did not, and I the one's I bought last night do not fit. Is there a special kind? I am slowing getting pissed at my purchase of this car because of no foor mats, no license plate screws, and a Bose system that sucks. Even my friends new Escort came with floor mats and license plate screws, but yes, it is an Escort. However, You would think a 30K car would include these items.

 

You should be able to pick up the proper screws from your local dealer--for free. At least they are at our store. The Service Department will normally have a few hundred of them available to put on license plates for new customers.

They may even install the plates free!

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try because evidently there is a "special" screw.

 

Don't assume your dealer will give you the right size screws. My dealer put my temporary tag on my Z. When my new tag arrived, I replaced the temporary tag and tag frame with my permanent tag. The screws would not tighten all the way, so my license plate is not held tight. Worse, while tightening the screws, one of the mounts stripped so my current tag is really the permanent tag for this car unless Nissan has a clever way to remove it.

 

No I did not get them either. When I went back to Nissan they gave me self tapping wood screws.

I can tell you they are metric and I got mine at lowes. I took one of the clips (the ones with the nut in the plate holes) in with me and fitted a perfect screw. It cost a buck.

 

mine has bolt head screws, I was suprised when my screwdriver did me no good and I had to go get the ol ratchet set. but then again, it isnt real simple to steal my plate off my car

Don't worry about "stripping out" the retainer for the rear license plate. The retainer is what I call a "blind nut," meaning you can insert a screw or bolt of the correct dimension without needing to access the retainer. The blind nut is easily removed from the car and replaced. Speak with your dealer.

As for the license plate bolts: no, I didn't get 'em either. The sales person gave me a coarse thread, self-tapping bolt. Just looking at the bolt, I felt like it was the wrong size, so I gingerly tried threading it into the blind nut without the license plate. It tried to cross thread and strip, as you discovered.

I removed the bolt and the blind nut from the "Z" and went to the local hardware store. I chose a slotted-head screw of the correct dimension (trial and error). It is a metric size, as you would expect.

 

It's simple. License plate screws are all the same and made to a specific pitch and diameter. Just go to any auto parts store and locate the "license plate" screws. There are several head types, hex, round, and security, and different lengths.
