Default Is grinding 2nd a common problem?

I was wondering if grinding into 2nd gear was a common problem with the transmission or if its a driver error.

I hammer it in first and shift at the redine, but sometimes it grinds going in 2nd gear. I am pretty sure I am pressing the clutch all the way in. It grinds sometimes when I am driving hard, but never when I am driving normal.

Any input is appreciated

I would guess it is just you letting out on the clutch too fast. That's the only time I've ever had grinding was when I thought I had popped it into second and it wasn't quite in and I let out for a brief second.

its a drivers error.. dont think ur tranny is bad... well it might be, but most likely a driver error, jus shift a lil smoother, instead of tryin to make it the fastest shift ever...lol clutch in all the way, shift, clutch out.. jus do it fast..

Yes, it is common. No, it is not you. Yes, it is the tranny. Mine does it too, if you rev real high in first then shift into 2nd. I will not be taking mine in thou. I just changed my shifting habits. Those who have not experienced this for themselves will say it is you and your driving. I can assure you it is not.

Does it to me all the time, it's ONLY second, third to fouth does not do this, only first to second at redline. Mines a 05, what year is your model? I don't think this is that big of a problem, or should I just get tranny replaced? I hate the dealer, they damaged my middle console with a screw driver or some other sharp object the last time I went in. **SIGH** If you shift a little to the right it doesn't grind, just don't jam it all the way to the left, although it is second, works for me at times.

My dealer service rep told me that 2nd gear is the most common one to go...

funny how mine was 5th and 6th both times. And I would love to hear someone blame me for mis-shifting 6th BWAHAHAHAHA.

i heard 3rd was the culprit, and 5th being a common one also. i had 3rd gear synchros go in my first one then they replaced it and now 5th is super hard to get into gear, even when they first put it in. right when i got it back from having them replace the trans i never hit the freeway (or 5th gear) and went right into my shop for forced induction. voiding my warranty, so they put in a bad trans that i will have to fix at my expense. i have never missed a shift in the new trans and it still doesn't work right.

I hear ya man. Everytime I read these tranny threads I want to run away from the idea of getting a Z. I don't want my car spending all it's time getting new trannys put in every month or 2.

I would have to say this tranny thing concerns me more than anything about the Z. People having their trannys replaced more than once already while still under the warranty? How many times will it have to be replaced when the warranty runs out? Thank God for the Lemon law I guess:-(

What do you mean grinding? If i'm redlining my Z in 1st then slam it into 2nd I don't hear anything but my tires chirp and a nice lil speed boost. Are you mistaking that as something bad? I have my suspicion that all these tranny replacements *or the majority at least* are just due to misuse by overzealous drivers burning out their clutch/transmission by racing from every light and stop sign. But as I said.. its just a feeling I have.

NO, I am not mistaking the chirping for the grinding. I hear the chirp after the grind. The grind sounds like...well a grind.

Also the car is a sports car and should be able to take constant abuse. (In my opinion) If not I am going to go through trannys and make nissan by it back.

Wouldn't you think it's more of driver error? If you have 3 replaced already, then maybe need to change the way you shift. Mine does it when I try to speed-shift.. Like rev it to redline and shift very fast from 1st to 2nd. If I wait just a tiny bit, it will not grind. But this does not happen all the time.. Just 1 out of 30 times..

Nope.. I can leave my clutch in all the way, be cruising at 50 mph, and just shift (all the while holding in the clutch) from 5th to 6th back and forth and it GRINDS GRINDS GRINDS.

Mine is so bad I dont even need to be pressing the gas at all to reproduce it.
