Default Timing Chain Service due at 22k miles?

I just took my Z in for an oil change at 37k miles and they said they recommended a timimg chain service at 22k miles....and I had missed it. I told them to go ahead and do it for 80$ but I kinda feel like it isn't necessary or they are just after some easy money. Has anyone heard of such a procedure? what does it involve or did I just get ripped off?

Timing Chain for $80, thats sounds kinda low. Timing belts are normally changed at 60K miles. Read the manual, mines not handy at the moment.

not a new timing chain...just "timing chain service" (it's actually 115$ but includes changing the oil that I would have paid 30$ or so for.

BS!! There is no major service required until 102k miles. And I belive the Z no longer requires a "timing belt" replacement because it has a chain. If it did the service would be more like $800.00 not 80.00.

My 22k service did cost around 250.00 though. Can't remember what was involved but no mention of a timing belt.

I got that. Just comparing to my other Z's that did require belt replacement. Regardless, its a chain, whats to service? If there is a tensioner I doubt it could be accessed easily and certainly not for 80.00.

What kind of "service" would a timing chain need, especially at only 22K miles? I could understand if at 50 or 60K miles you needed to open the cover and inspect it.

There is nothing to do to the timing chain untill it goes bad, which in a Nissan with typical oil changes is around 150k+. You have been snookered

I agree I have been snickered. It is a Dealer Recommended Service, not a Factory Recommended Service. They basically flushed my engine oil. --->>Colonial Nissan Feasterville PA

I just looked at the pdf manual for 05. No mention of timing chain service. I have a 94 Altima with timing chain that has 163K miles on it, the chain has never been serviced or adjusted, not even the idler sprockets. So I think this service might be just to get money from the customer.

I have a shop here in Houston. I am curious as to what this "service" entails. Could you fax me the service order? I think you just found me a new money maker....timing chain service....$80 a pop. If it was a tensioner, belt/chain, cam or crank sprocket, or anything that would involve retiming the car, I would charge at least $250 plus parts. Maybe this dealer intends to spray some parts cleaner on it and call it a day.

Almost everything on the list of recommended service entails looking at the components, not actually doing anything to them. I'm at 26,000 miles and the dealer has seen my car for the 1st oil change and 2 warranty issues. I am not paying them to "look" at my car.

I completely agree, if they want to look at something then I can do it myself, unless its some inaccessible place or something that needs training.

Guys,

Timing chain is not like timing belt. It can go over 100K without service.

Ease up, dealers take advantage of our love/paranoia of our Z's. It isnt his fault hes not a mechanic. I agree he got raped and its unfortunate but lets not kick him while hes down. Id try giving them a call back and asking to speak to a manager. Then id ask for a detailed reason why it was 80 and why he wasnt informed nissan didnt recommend doing the service. Then if he didnt offer to give me my money back id go down there at 2pm on a saturday and tear him a new one (dealerships busiest time). Dealers **** me off so bad aaarrrggghhhh.

Anyone who buys what dealers tell them without doing their own research deserves what they get. Come on people, dealers aren't your mommies; take responsibility for your own actions or ignorance and quit whinning.
