Evo owns the Z.
Mod for mod, the EVO is a great car to upgrade. Leaps and bounds easier to upgrade than the Z. Any turbo vehicle is. But I think you're missing a few important points.
Could you post his dynograph? I'm guessing
that his peak of 500+ comes on very late. Do some more reading and you'll realize that in the real world, peak HP is about as cool as a poop-flavored lolipop. Guys that tune cars for real world performance tune for area under.....well, re-read my earlier post. Your friend Mike's 30psi is a magazine article, not a racecar. Quit reading Super Street.
DSMs are definately fast cars, but I can't believe you brought them up. They're fast alright, but they are notoriously cheap automobiles. Defanitely a testament to Mitsu quality.
I think now you're exaggerating. I don't think the Z has any problems handling that kind of power at all. A few supporting mods, conservatively tuned, and a daily driven 400HP Z is not really a big deal.
If you think you can toss a can of 110 at the EVO, turn the boost up and sit on a reliable 500rwhp, you've got some things to learn.
I'm guessing that when you "maxed the power limit" of your Z, you were running a supercharger of some sort, right?
I wonder if this thread has been linked on the EVO forums yet...
Nice cars guys.

I too have thought about getting the Evo, because it is a faster straight line performer, an easier platform to build on, and let's face it, AWD is superior to RWD in most every way. BUT I must say that I have NEVER been beat by an Evo at an autocross or track day...NEVER. Oh and they do look a lot like a lancer...
But congratulations on your Evo, hope you enjoy and if you are ever in the south, come to a track day or autocross and you can TRY to make me eat my words

Ok, i'm getting my Z hopefully in 2 weeks. Just to tell you all the guys with the Z, stop talking smack. We're never going to reach 1700hp in our Zs. So now you're comparing a lambo to an evo, wow. Doesn't the enzo run in the 11's for 1/4 miles? Oh yeah if you put 600 to the wheels to your evo you're going ot have a 0-60 in a time of 3.1 and a 1/4 time of 11.1 sec. Don't underestimate what this car can do. I have a lot of respect for these guys. Go to their forums and talk cars with them. It's like their on a whole other level of car talk. Have fun with that evo bro, it's a badass car, I'm pretty sure it could smoke a lambo too with the right mods and cost a whole lot cheaper.

performance my *** evos are the weakest top end cars. they are like drag limited to 155. Evos just have a decent launch and for the money i feel the sti or z would be the better investment. I don no how u would thin and evo is a better investment i think its pretty weak for a turbo car honestly new age sports cars with turbos have gone down hill since the supra and skyline left. My brtoher and i raced a full bolt on and cammed evo and still pulled away from it after 120.
thats bs sayin that a awd is superior. When they suck up top and when it comes to makin serious power from a stop a rwd will be superior to a awd and the rwd will out launch an awd car when they start makin serious hp numbers.
i've read all these posts.... its 5 minutes of my life that I am never going to be able to get back.
If you like a Z... buy a Z.
If you like a Neon... buy a Neon.
I think your just antagonizing the kid that started this thread.

Both are cool cars. Both are fast. Both handle well. Both can be modified to suit your needs and wants.
Make your own decision, then STFU and don't criticize others for picking one over the other.
SweetsilverZ is acting pretty immature... calling people ***s etc., but that doesn't mean everyone has to sink to his level. Just let him drive his lancer and leave it be.

i was at the streets of willow when an instructor took me out for a ride in his evo. he was also a former Z owner. bought the evo because he thought he would be faster. after riding with him and driving my car i have come to the realization that RWD > AWD. understeer is your enemy people. awd loves to understeer. when you come to think about it the fastest cars in the world are RWD. take a look at F1 cars for example, or japanese GT cars, or lemans cars. case in point the evo is a great car if you want to blast down the drag strip. the Z is a very well rounded SPORT's car. the evo is a very fast sedan........

To the OP who thinks his EVO can go 700hp on stock internals has got to be kidding.
You can maybe do that on a GTR but not on an EVO.
I think he's been watching too much Best Motoring and mag racing and sprouting what his best friend says.

Sorry for the stupid question but what is an EVO?
This thread caught my attention and I am very curious about it.
The closest thing I could find on Mits's website is a car called a Lancer Evolution.
This can't be the car that this thread is talking about is it?
I say that because what I see on Mit's website is a car that looks like a tricked out Honda Civic.
This EVO that you are all talking about must be something other than that because the discussion of a riced out 'Civic' with a turbo charger slapped on a 4 banger would not take 4 pages on this board.
Thanks for any answers

EVO is indeed the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. It takes it body from the typical Lancer, but fitted it with a more powerful engine and AWD capabilities. Its a light car for a 4 door and so safety is not a concern.

Ok, I am not going to take sides in this, but take this for what it is worth. I do want to shed some light on some misconceptions in this thread and since I have an Evo, a very well prepped Evo, which is sponsored by several vendors and shops, and I am a driving instructor for several very well respected clubs, I want to chime in.
First, for the conservative modder (is that a word) the Evo can make @360 to the wheels for about 3grand, less if you know / are a good tuner. For about 3 grand more, you can make 550 to the wheels on the stock internals, and it may live if you don't beat on it alot. However, don't think you can go to VIR or Roebling and pull that kind of power for 30 minutes straight on-track, something will fail. But, for the dyno or the occasional drag racer, it may hold for a year or two, realistically, As for the more extreme setups, the shop I drive for has already made over 900whp with less than 15grand in mods (their cost). And the car could be daily driven, but isn't. With nitrous and more tuning, they think they can hold just over 1000whp. Granted, this car is a dyno queen / drag car, which is designed for short beatings. Oh, and this is on a 2.0L, you can't get numbers this big out of a stroked 2.3L, because you can't twist a stroker over 8000, yet. We are turning the 2.0L just over 9, and we think it will hold 10 off of bottle. The 2.3 is a much better open-track motor, which you can extract 300ft/lb of torque pretty readily right off boost, even with a smaller 3071R turbo. It almost feels like driving a stock Z06 or a tuned cobra, because of the grip and immediate power.
As for track/race potential. Unfortunately or fortunately, stock for stock, the Evo will had the Z a beating on a road course. Heck, on TopGear, a stock Evo MR FQ400 whooped up on a Lambo Murcilogo (sp), which I highly recommend you download, funny as crap, I love that show. Anyway, AWD makes the car so freakin stable, you can drive well beyond the limits of a RWD car, and safely recover. Stock, I have gone insane times at several tracks, before I started modding. With the coil-overs and other suspension mods, the thing is just a rocket even with street tires. Case in point, at Road Atlanta, I was running with Vipers and Z06's, which is impressive, however, they would have been pissed to know I was running at 16lbs of boost on the stock turbo, but was able to make up the difference in the higher entrance and exit speeds in the corners while on track.
Now, speaking of modded, the Z, IMHO can be made into a more potent track machine, which is why I am getting rid of my Evo and buying a Z (provided I can find one here with what I want/don't want on it).
With the Z basic physics is your friend. With some minor suspension and brake upgrades, some good tires, and some shedding of weight, well, the car would be a monster. However, I would probably ditch the new power plant in favor of an older one with boost, just something with more parts (lighter parts) available at a lower cost. Granted the Evo, modded is fast, but the Z has a better (lower) roll center, center of gravity, and can actually get pretty good weight distribution at every corner. The AWD on the Evo makes the car heavy, and the high roof, makes the car hard to control(snappy) with severe mods. Most vendors have to lower the car so much they have very little suspension travel, and spend half their time on track bouncing off the bumpstops, in order to get a lower roll center front and rear.
But, all in all, both are great cars, and can provide endless entertainment for the owners. Where I run, like was said earlier, 99% of the time, it is the driver, not the car which is fast. I have had students in the old Expresso Neons whipping up on guys in Boxster S's. So, for most of us, if we wanted to spend money on a mod, spend it on Seat-time, not performance mods. That is where you will truly get more bang for the buck.

<ignores thinly veiled trolling>
Congratz on the Evo. I love the performance of the Evo but it is god-awful ugly.
I was looking at it as one of my car options but all I needed was one look and one test drive of the Z and I knew I had found my new car.

I don't really think this is a Z vs. Evo thread. Many of us love and respect Evos, even if we chose not to buy one. The OP is doing nothing here but undermining the positive view that many of us, including myself, had of Evo's and the Evo crowd previously.
SweetSilverZ is an attention *****. End of story. They are putting themselves on a pedestal and blatantly disrespecting all members of this board and their cars.

Both are GREAT cars! I dunno why people keep saying the Z handles better than the Evo because it's not true. On a Z the wieght distribution is awesome and with the wider stance and lower center of gravity makes the Z a good track car. But the Evo still out performs the Z on a track. In fact as StopandTurnFreak said the Evo out performs many exotic cars like the Lambo. I'll try and find the link with the video for those of you who want to see for yourselves. I'm only comparing Stock for Stock, if you wanna talk potential well...how big is your pocket??? I have a Z and IMO it looks WAAAAY better than an Evo. Im over the whole street racing thing, and I wanted something sporty and of course something a chic would enjoying being seen in. I was a Lancer owner before and people do look at the car but it's not the "wow hey nice car" look it's usually a "wow ugly, or crazy spoiler" look. So congrats on the Evo its a great car.

Here is the Evo track time(NOTE: I don't have the clip of the 350Z but it ranked up towards the middle matching the track time of an RX8)
