Anyone think the FX35 sounds better than a 350Z?
From inside the cabin with the radio off, no a/c, windows either up or down, I find that the FX35 has a much more pleasing sound through at least the first 3 gears. After that, wind noise takes over and I can't really tell the difference or haven't really tried.
In the FX, I find that exhaust has a deeper, throatier sound than compared to the Z, both in startup and under revs. Inside the 350z, the sound is still pleasing, but the exhaust note is overcome by the sound of the engine/intake.
Haven't compared from the outside, so the two may very well have similar exhaust notes. Just from inside the cabin, the exhaust note is more evident in the FX.
I understand that the Z probably has less sound-proofing material, but what can I do to make the car sound more like the FX, or rather, more overall pleasing. New intake, new exhaust?
I have a stock 287bhp 350Z and comparisons were made with a stock FX35.

Yeah, they are louder. I want that louder sound with my car but I'm afraid of losing the tone of the stock exhaust. Some exhausts for the Z make it sound like a civic with a rice can on it.
heh yeah that FX crossover is pretty cool looking. My whole family including myself is not a fan of SUVs. The only non american SUVs that I like are the FX and the QX.
QX I like just for its pimpness... soooooo shiny and so big. I'd love to get a license plate: "Tank Jr" on mine... Quake III fans will laugh at that one

The Z is much LESS soundproof. I've had 'em all. Started with a G35c, went to an FX35 and now am in a Z. The Z is deffinitely the loudest on the inside; major diff. going from the FX to the Z. They all sound the same from the outside. You want the Z to sound more like the FX? put more soundproofing in it. The reason the FX sounds like that on the inside is b/c of it's soundproofing. It's not about the amount of sound, it's the parts of the sound entering the cabin that makes the difference. Short wavelength, higher sound frequencies are much more easily "caught" by soundproofing material; long wavelength, deeper frequencies pass through it. This is why the FX sounds more throughty on the inside; more of the deeper portions of the exhaust tone are entering the cabin, while more of the higher pitched tones in both the exhaust and engine are filtered out. In the Z, the lack of soundproofing lets these high frequencies in and that's why the nice sound you like of the exhaust is overcome by engine noise.
Is the lack of soundproofing the only reason their is more engine and induction noise inside the cabin of the Z? Or is it due to the setup of the engine as well?
I'd like the exhaust to be more prominient in the Z, but am not willing to add any weight in the form of soundproofing to do so.
Once a upon a time, I use to be all into car audio, and probably would of dynamatted the entire car, but that seems pretty useless to me now.

my folks have fx35, i think it has a nice sound as well. i havent really had a chance to listen to it wind up or anything - my folks dont drive it hard often and rarely drive it at that - but if i recall correctly it wasnt the loudness that impressed me so much as it was the low/deepness - not that it was super low or deep - just a lot more than i was expecting...
my other car is the fx45... great power the 35 sucks when u compare it to the 45, and to answer ur question, no the Z sounds better... the fx35 exhaust sounds like a scion tc with a terd exhaust
