That is what I meant earlier when I said that Geico and State Farm are not even comparable. State Farm is by far a superior company that offers far more than just a better price.

i dont know if you can get USAA if you are not military, but they are by far the best insurance company. My insurance dropped $900 a year from geico, with more coverage and lower deductibles.

When I got married 5 years ago, I had AllState, and he had State Farm. We decided to go with State Farm. It was really expensive, I thought, but having just moved to VA, I just figured that insurance was more expensive there. About a year later, we moved to FL, stayed with State Farm, and our insurance went up, so I started shopping around. I went to AllState, told them I had been a previous customer of theirs, and asked for a quote. We saved $2000 a year, and had a lower deductable.
Since then, I've done more shopping around with USAA, Geico, and Progressive, and none of them can beat AllState's rates, for us, anyway. We pay about $1800 a year for two 350Zs and an SUV, with a $250 collision deductable and $0 comprehensive.
Another good thing about AllState is when my husband got a speeding ticket last year, we called them to see what we needed to do to keep our rates from going up...they said NOTHING. They told him not to waste his money on traffic school, because they wouldn't raise our rates unless one of us got more than 12 points on our license within a year.

Many of you may NOT know this, but GEICO was previously an insurance company that catered exclusively to federal employees (GEICO = Government Employees Insurance Company).
As such, they were (and proabably still are) somewhat strict when it comes to filing claims. My dad used to work with the Feds and they are strict and rigid about every damn thing.
The lizard may be cool and all, but he's just a marketing ploy to get people warm and fuzzy about GEICO.

So I go on Geico.com, get a quote for the same thing but a $500 deductable. The new price is $133/Month or $1,606/Year. So I call up to verify that, and they run my credit....price drops to $110/Month $1,320/Year for a savings of about $1,700/year
I'm switching lol. Moral of the story, call around for insurance!

My gut instinct is this is a case where "you get what you pay for". But that's only a guess at best.

From what I understand, most companies uses your driving record, age, marital status, sex, credit and driving history in coming up with your rates. I don't know what they are, but progressive uses about twice as many factors as everyone else. Most companies, I think have 3 rate classes, prog. has 9. At least thats what I heard on Clark Howard one day.
I know from my young days that GEICO handles claims nicely, or they did, but then they drop you. I flipped my 4x4 doing a reverse powerslide spin (ala starsky and hutch) and they wrote me a check the next day, plus payed the supp. amount when the estimate came in higher.

USAA is the way to go for me... $1m in various coverages (maxed just about everything), $936/yr for the Z and a shitbox volvo (va beach)... of course, i think if you're under 25, they're pretty expensive (lol, what do you expect... they get stuck with covering Joe)

I am not sure what my deductibles are but I have a 2005 Z and a 2005 Xterra and through State Farrm my insurance is about $145 a month. Me and my wife are both in our early fortys. My wife even totaled a car right before we got the Xterra.

Every time I move I reshop my insurance and have been through four different companies including both State Farm (Washington state) and GIECO (California). For whatever reason they "like" different cities better or worse than another company with the same car and same driver!
