I fill at 40 miles after gas light comes on and fills to about 18 gallons.

When I first bought my '03 350Z I drove it across the country. I was on a 3200 mile road trip and got tired of filling up right when the low fuel light came on because I found out that I still had plenty (4 gal.) of gas in the car. From the time the low fuel warning light came on until I actually ran out of gas, I drove 101 miles. Yes, I purposly ran the car out of gas just to see how far it would go and had a 2 gallon can with me in the car so I was fine. Yes I know it's not the best thing to do but I was feeling a little like Kramer on that Seinfeld episode. I notice that when my low fuel light comes on, if I fill up immediately I still have about 4 gallons of gas in the car or 1/5 of a tank since the tank holds 20 gal. Keep in mind that I was driving at highway speeds. I think the low fuel light is very premature. When it goes on it should be telling you to get gas now, not hey you can still drive another 100 miles. So to answer your question, I typically fill the car up somewhere between 0-100 miles after that low fuel light warning comes on and I have never had a problem with clogged injectors, poor fuel economy or anything of the sort.

Here is some info, although I dunno if it necessarily applies to every car out there.

When the triple dashes pop up normally. The most I've ever put in is 19.1 gallons. I always forget when I don't have gas and wake up in the morning only with time to get to school and drive with them flashing.
