Default car cover that provides protection from hail

is there such a thing? i live in dallas and we do get hail in the winter- problem is i don't have covered parking.

priorities -
will not scratch the car - even in heavy wind
protects from hail.

i am considering getting a beater for bad weather if i cant find a good car cover.

any suggestions - the soft covers i found only protect from dust
and i havent found any that claim to protect from hail.

The only time I see that it can protect from hail is if the car cover is very loose and parts of the cover does not touch the car surface. In that situation, the hail can be slowed down before it hits the car. But if the car cover area is sitting on the car's surface like the roof, hail is gonna have the same impact as if you didn't have the car cover on.

Hail is about impact. The car cover in my opinion only protects the car from bird poop, tree sap, leaves, dust(if stored in garage), etc.

If somone could make a car cover with two or three layers of something like bubble wrap integrated in it, I think that may provide a certain level of protection against hail.

What ZlleH said. To avoid scratches, you will need a custom-fit cover which there are dozens of, but that would be like a second skin, so any hail falling on that would have the same effect as without it.

Sorry, but there is no protection without a roof. You'll be kidding yourself if u think otherwise.

I got a 'portable' garage from Sam's Club, which isn't portable, but does a great job of protecting anything under it. About $600.00 for a 10'X20'.

If you can find a cover that is made out of some sort of foam padding that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, that should really dampen the force of impact from hail. It may not be a "perfect" solution, but it is better than having nothing over the car. I do not know if such a product is made, but it would need to be pretty tight, kinda like a second skin in order to deaden the impact as much as possible.

Don't forget CATS. A good padded cover from California Car Covers will reduce the impact from hailstones, and absolutely foil the efforts of cats to slide down the hood with claws extended.

I am experimenting to make a light weight “hail protector”. Built a prototype in June to prove the concept and it appears to work. Now I just have to find some time to make a real one. Testing is a major issue. It's no problem if it works, but think what happens if it doesn’t !!!

My idea is that the protector must be light and small enough that it would fit in the trunk of my ZR with room for some junk (like a golf bag), but yet strong enough to withstand the hail. In addition, it has to be easy enough to put on because I have to consider the possibility of pulling over from traffic and put it on after the 1st piece of hail hits the windshield. And of course it cannot scratch the paint.

If I can make it work, how many of you would be interested in buying one. I have no idea how much it’s gonna cost me to build one yet.

Sorry, I didn't take a picture. Besides, this may be a long shot, if this works, this may help me with some pocket change. Towards my TT perheps?

TRQ,
I shall keep you informed. Don't expect it to be any time soon though. I may work on it during the winter months. Too busy right now.
