just curious,might be a stupid question but........ when driving regularly or driving hard i always push the clutch down to the floor when changing gears. I kno you can change gears with the clutch pressed down less then half way. I was wondering how far most ppl push the clutch down when driving regularly or driving hard? is it better to push the clutch down all the way? when driving hard i would guess its faster to push the clutch down just half way? Just curious bc it seems the clutch catches very high in my car and its not necessary to push it down all the way. Also curious if it puts more wear on the clutch as would say always pressing the brake pedal down all the way when stopping.

 

I always make a habit to press the clutch down all the way in my 300z, not pressing down all the way is a good way to grind a gear. I dont think it would wear it down any more or less by pressing it all the way down, because once the clutch is disengaged it is disengaged, but I could be wrong somebody correct me if I am.

Down all the way....always, the only time I dont is when double up*down shifting....

 

For casual driving, yes, push the clutch to the floor. For more aggressive driving, see “drag racing.” You'll find lots of techniques suggested there.

 

I always push to the floor now. I had one bad experience when i was redlining in 3rd and shifted to 4th, with my foot half down on the clutch. Bad mistake. The sound of the gears was not a grinding sound, more like a metal shaving sound when you put a drill to a block of metal. Never again.

i think 1% disengangment can let you switch gears and i found out in my auto-x session...

 

All the way down through the floor is my style.

I go about half way or so...just enough to engage the clutch and then a tad more for safety.

Now if you get into motorcycles, that's another story...if you're using your clutch to upshift you just ain't doin' it right. Not using it to downshift and you're gonna burn up some expensive parts.

The one time I didn't push it to the floor I grinded. It always hits the floor now.

 

i was freaking out on my first auto-x run and i shoved the gear into 2nd with about 1% engangement and it went through with out grinding...
i was like omg did i just do that? ya guys know what im saying?

 

it catches high in my car too...hehehehe....one option is to shorten the clutch...pretty cheap to do...

 

this is one of my issues with the 350z with the factory set up...

there is no reason to press the clutch all the way to the floor... on most 350z's its only half way down it needs to be pressed...

there are ways to set it up so the pedal doesnt go all the way to the floor...

First to second I tend not to go to the floor because it takes too much darn time. But then I can "feel" the synchros and "hear" the clutch when I am in going in to the wrong gear which allows me to abort abort abort. Downshifting I always rev match... unless I am trying to drink my coffee

 

Half way down for me as well. On my previous 1990 Honda Accord, i also pressed only half way down, and that clutch lasted about 220,000 Miles. So i dont think by pressing half way will cause any problem.

 

All the way down! Always have on stick shifts. After hearing some of you saying the dealer wants two grand to replace the clutch - I am even more convinced!

its not that much to replace a clutch...

and you will wear it down more pressing it down too far and hyperextending the pressure plate!
