keep redlining
There is an old saying...."Practice makes perfect". It's ok to hit the rev-limiter in this car while you're learning what redline sounds like. Make a concerted effort to learn that sound and make your shifts based on it. Heck, I can't think of a more fun thing to "practice"...Ok, I can, but nothing I can post here.
You'll get the hang of it man, don't sweat it.

I guaran-****in-tee there is a follow up post saying "What kind of piece of garbage is Nissan building that can't take boucing off the rev-limiter multiple times daily. I am sure shifting gears in this manner couldn't possibly have anything to do with my grinding on my fourth tranny." How do you not know it is time shift before it bounces off the rev-limiter? Can you not hear the engine screaming at you at 6500 rpm? I firmly believe that if you need to think out every move you make in your car then you are not prepared to drive. Please return your vehicle to the nearest Nissan dealership. Don't bother driving there, we can't risk it. Call a tow truck.
DAMNIT I NEED PRACTICE WITH MY MANUAL! ive said that in like 5 different threads. were you born the pro you obvioulsly are with your MT? next time make something better up about me than not being able to get out of the bed and behind the wheel in the morning
so stfu

You'll get the feel for it. If you are really getting on her, shifting at about 6300 rpm's will put you right where you need to be for the next gear. On a powershift (where you don't let your foot off of the clutch), a shift at 6300 rpm's will momentarily send the tach up about 2-300 rpm's, followed by the tach lowering to somewhere in the 4000 rpm range as you catch your next gear. This puts you right in the meat of the powerband of the engine. Its all about feel tho. Not every Z is the same, and I assure you that I am still getting used to it after owning my Z for 2 months now.
How can you not shift before it starts to redline.. Maybe it's because I always shift at around 6000 during 'spirited driving'. Btw, I left a ws6 in the dust today. =]

TK2005's point is that there's a percentage of people w/Zs that don't know how to drive and/or abuse their cars and then ***** because something breaks, grinds, etc. due to their incompetance. You better not be one of those complaining about Nissan quality being crappy when you have problems as a result of abuse.
If your really need help on shifting, you might want to invest on an aftermarket shiftlight w/ sound . I bought one from on of the Inventors here on this board. His name is Chris Mcagle
. Here's a link on his site. http://www.350zfreak.com/. Hope this helps!

Good news to all you hamfisted shifters:
On stock tires the rear end will break loose before you drag the engine past the redline. Granted, you have to be under braking with the *** all light and skwerly.
I speak from experience. Last week I grabbed 2nd instead of 4th heading into the bus stop at Watkins Glen. My excuse? I was a little busy at the time trying to get from 130 to 60. Anyhow, the rear broke loose as I turned in and I scrubbed from about 65 to 55. I caught the slide, and on the in-car video I can see the tach shoot to 5,600 rpm, at which point the road is going the same speed as the tires and the slide ends. Besides the shock on the drivetrain, the incident went about as well as could be expected. Again, this was with the rear end up in the air under braking, so grabbing 2nd at 100 on the highway could be more disastrous, as you would have more grip available in the rear.
As soon as I get the DV converted and find some hosting space, I'll post some helmetcam footage. I already have a montage made of all the point-bys
