Default The "wheel lock" speech...

I took my '05 in for her first service last week and seeing as how it was complimentary I sort of expected to hear some b.s. "you might need such and such on the vehicle". And sure enough, I was not disappointed. Before I signed the paperwork to leave, the lead mechanic (or whoever he was) said,
"You know, we noticed while we were checking over the vehicle that you didn't have any wheel locks on the tires. And well, you know you might want those on for your own safety. And we can put those on for you today for $52.00!" Now you guys may know more about this than me, but I had no idea OEM 350Z wheels and stock Potenzas had such a high value on the black market

Anyone else experience anything similar from the dealer???

People will steal anything that's not nailed down. I would get a set (not from the dealer) just to be safe(r).

i think the other day someone talked about his OEM 17's getting stolen... his insurance paid him $4k to get replaced though so I will take my chances w/o wheel locks.

yea its too bad 75% of the wheel locks people have on their car can be taken off with tools that anyone can order offline. i worked at a garage and people lost their wheel locks all the time, we had a selection of tools to remove like 15 different styles of wheel locks, never had one that we couldnt get off. also didnt take more than about 15 seconds per lock.

Any lock can be opened just like any car can get stolen even if it hs the best alarm. Wheel locks and car alarms are put on more as a deterrent.

Let's just say you have two nice 350Z lined up with the same exact nice wheels and rims. One has "the club" put on the steering wheel and a wheel lock. The other Z doesn't have either. Now wich car do you think the thief will target so he can get away faster?

"The path of the less resistince."

Question

Jason,

Which locks work with the NISMO wheels on the 350Z?

Thanks!

I don't think its bad advise to say you should have some lock nuts. Its not full proof but its along the lines of locking your car door (which I assume you do). At least it keeps litte Johnny and his drunk high school buddies from walking by and getting ideas.

I've had sandals stolen from my front door and the nozzle from my water hose stolen too. People will steal anything that isn't locked down or monitored 24.

The factory lock style / mcgard style are harder to remove then some of the other ones...

These took me at most an extra minute per wheel to remove...

the name has been blurred out to protect the manufacturer...

I used to have the ones from Autozone for like 15 buck on my 3G Eclipse, and then the ****ty key that came with them stripped out. OMG I was so pissed. I had to weld bits of solder to the key and beat the **** out of it and hammer it into the wheel lock to get it off. PITA! They also make tools to take off the locks but if the lug hole is too tight it won't work.

I have some tools that will remove any wheel lug nuts, It takes me about 30 min and makes quite a bit of noise so probably not the choice of most theifs but hey I have had wheel locks on all my cars. i just hate it when I loose the key. or the tire place keeps it etc...

I had my factory 18's stolen. It ended up being about a $6,500 insurance claim. You have to get the wheels, tires, air sensors, and center caps. Now I have a Club, 2-way pager alarm, and 2 wheel locks per rim(HRE's). They same thiefs came through my parking garage about 6 months later. They left my car alone and stole from a few other's. The more deterrants you have, then less appealing your car looks.

WOW! 6k from insurance for the rims!? I need to have mine "stolen."

vo7848- Did you replace the air sensors since got aftermarket rims? I heard they cannot be used with anything bigger than 18's.
