just look at the similarities between the new Cayman and the new Bug and u'll see what i mean....my buddy's 911 twin turbo is costing him six to seven grand each time it's in shop. if you can't work on it yourself... stay away from it unless money is no object for you.... IMO

Are you saying then that... a Lamborghini is nothing but an overpriced VW?!?!

Or perhaps that a Benz is nothing but an overpriced Chrysler/Jeep??

I could understand your reasoning in comparing a Toureg to a Cayenne.... but none of the other P-cars.

I dont like the term poor man's porshe because the z does not look the porshe nor is it trying to be a porshe. The Z is a Z. Now the new eclipse is a different story because it is trying very hard to be a Z and not an eclipse.

Actually, the Eclipse looks more like the 2nd gen Eclipse than the Z... so i wouldnt say its trying to be a Z.

I actually picked the Z over the 911 and the Boxster.

It's just a car ... gee.

hehe don't i loved this thread....i think i finally stepped on somebody's tail.....your absolutely right, a goddamn Mercedes is an expensive Chrysler product (i own a sh!tty a$$ M320 Benz/built here in the USA when Benz took over Chrysler), just take one good look at the brand new Benz R class..they are built on the same platform as a Chrysler Pacifica, the only difference is the engine placement between the two cars.....ok, the benz is more on the plush side.
i don't know anything about the Lambo, but a freaking Ferrarri is a freaking overpriced damned FIAT, Fiat owns Ferrarri or is it the other way around. They break down all the time. Will someone correct me if i was WRONG.
i just had a conversation with my German Mechanic (from Germany)who works on my m320...he says VW owns Porsche and Audi and they are more or less similar cars.
I do like the 911 RUF edition which tops out at 212mph on the autobahn....

I have twice wanted to buy a Porsche 911 in my life. Each time I ended up with a Z. The first time I test drove a 1971 911 and ended up buying a 1976 Z. This time I wanted a 1997 911 and ended up buying a 2003 Z.

Both times the decidng factor was maintenace cost and insurance cost.

If money was no object I would still want the 911. I have always wanted one but to be honest it is more for the Porsche mystique than the difference in performance.

I have no problem with anyone calling my Z a "poor man's Porsche". In my case it is absolutely true and I am very happy that Nissan makes a car that can be compared to a Porsche for 1/2 the money!

Lambos and Ferraris dont share platforms like VW and Audi or Mercedes & Chrysler or Ford & Volvo. Even though they are partly owned by VW or FIAT, they dont share anything, well Lambos after been taken over by VW have better interiors than before.

I am not sure if Porsche shares any platform with VW other than Touareg/Cayenne.

I'm not going to kid myself, if I could have justified $90k+ for a car thats driven once a week, I'd probably have a Porsche Carrera 4S AWD (or maybe a new Viper). The Z is a good car for the money, I also understand fully what it is not.

For the younger readers, note that the Z-Car was always referred to as the "poor man's Porsche", and it was always meant as a compliment except from the snobby, whom you shouldn't care about anyway. Whatever one's taste in lines, Porsche has always been synonymous with performance and style; that so many people mistook the Z, in all incarnations except the Z32, as a Porsche, is a big compliment.

Ha ha ha. Not that this has anything to do with the Z and the Porsche. But I can remember (back in the day) when they refered to the Opel GT as a poor mans Vette. Back when I was a youngster in my original 240z days.

Default why I think porsches are ugly

I love the 350Z lines way more then the Porsche. The only thing I see in common is the roof line. Go here for a photoshop comparison I did of the Z and the Porsche: https://my350z.com/forum/showpost.ph...1&postcount=98

Disclaimer: No, I'm not saying the Z is better then the Porsche. I have always dislike the look of the Porsche. This does not mean the Porsche is a bad car. Just not my taste in lines.
Look at the link and pictures above, I couldn't agree more:
The angle between windshield and hood seems less pronounced on the Z. It looks ugly on the porsche (most left picture).

The headlights coming out is not my taste of style. It makes the hood look comparatively wimpy and the whole car look like a duck.

The rear line goes down all the way.. Never personally liked that style. Less powerful looking. Like a beetle but a little more flat (not as round as a beetle).

Then on the Porsche the glass windows are much taller in height compared to the tallness of the doors. Thats for example why a normal SUV (lets say a ford explorer) in my opinion looks uglier than lets say one of the pre-2003 4runners. The trick is to have more door than window vertically if you know what I mean. Then it looks way more mean and powerful.
Same happens here with the Z and Porsche: Probably the view out from the porsche is much more practical, but from outside the Z looks way more stylish with this massive body and stylish small windows.

I think the other porsches may look better... But will I get flamed if I say the porsche looks like somebody stepped on a beetle
So of course this is all personal preference, and I am sure there will be porsche looks lovers and z looks haters... but I am not one of them, and never met one either.

So I don't care how the z is called, and how it compares in performance, to be honest I bought it for the looks (ok and a little for the performance too).

If the porsche would cost 30k and the Z would not exist, I probably would have bought another SUV instead of a sports car and never found this cool forum.

I take the "poor man's porsche" comment as a term of endearment. Who better to be compared to really? And there are some similarities there. 2 nights ago I had to park down the street from my house in the rain (they are repaving my block). As I walked away I turned around and in the dark with the rain and the way the streetlight was hitting it....I could just as easily have been looking at a porsche. Besides it blows the boxter out of the water IMHO.

We used to call the 240Z a poor man Vette. It was a compliment the way we saw it!

I always thought a 911 looked like a squashed VW bug.
