Default Low MPG

Hi, I searched for something similar to my problem, but didnt find anything

Anyway,
I got my 5AT Z beginning of Sept. I used Regular gas for the first 2 times (was low on $ due to down payment, I know.. stupid)

I had 4/10th of a tank full when i put in 93 octane, and cleared my MPG (was 14.4 :O) to see if the 93 made any difference.

I drove around 10 miles or so at the average of 14 mph (city driving :x) and checked my MPG.. it was 14.6

I also checked my tires, they were at 30 all around. (btw whats the best tire PSI for daily driving?)

I dont understand why my MPG is so low, anyone have any suggestions?

30 psi is low. low psi = drag = low mpg.

either that or you drive the hell outta your z.

36 psi on the tires

Don't have the a/c on full blast

Slow down.

Check your mileage with the odometer and the fuel that you put in. You need to drive more than 10 miles to get an accurate number, also.

also, 10 miles is kinda low to be basing your mpg on. you would need to drive it for a little longer than that to get a better estimate.

thanks guys..

I will put my tires to 36 PSI, and reset the MPG to see how it goes.
I always drive with the windows down (unless its raining) so A/C is not the problem.

I dont drive hard, cant really drive hard on crowded streets :P

*he's got a 5 AT

Are you using the sportronic mode? That will make your gas mileage unhappy.

Around town i get around 17-18 depending on hard i drive. If i'm on it, really bad. On the highway, i can get 420 miles out of a tank with air on and doing 85.
I just drove to mobile from B'ham.
I drove around 85-95 the whole way and still averaged 22 MPG with the air on.

Driving 10 miles to work stop and go at a max speed of 14 MPH isn't going to get you good milage as most of your gas is wasted on idling.

Take a long road trip and break in the car properly instead of stop and go traffic.

Your car will be a nerf by the time the 1,200 mile break-in is done. I'm just trying to scare you. Actually, I don't think stop and go traffic is good for break-in really.

-Nope, I dont use sportronic for daily driving

I take good long highway speed cruises on the weekends (around 150 miles every weeekend)
so its not all stop and go

the traffic around here inst much stop and go, it was just that day :-D

I will also see how my MPG is on the weekend cruising

dude...get on a long stretched non-congested freeway and put your car on cruise @ 60-80mph and drive for about 50-100 miles...you'll see your mpg go up....dude driving average 14mph in stop and go traffic will kill your mpg...my drive to work is about 3-5 miles, and i really hate driving it short distance cuz the turn on and off drains most of my gas...and here's another advice, hehe....I have a meeting at work everyday, and whenever I get to work, I'd park my car in the front of the building, and after the meeting, I'd move my car to the back, which is about ummm....not even an 1/8mile drive....talking about draining your tank....try not tot take short trips and turning your car on and off too often...and one more thing, if you're driving high speed (55+), it's best to roll your windows up and turn on your a/c, as your a/c will not affect your mpg as much as if you were to put your windows down and get that wind drag slows your aerodynamic down...(lower coefficient of drag = better mpg)

oh yeah...about breaking in your car, you do NOT want to use cruise control during the break-in period...just don't gun the car, and you can drive at high all you want...but don't keep it at a constant speed....speeds up and slow down....drive at a variable speed

just made a trip from Va to Ohio: 93 Octane.

28 miles per gallon mostly going about 75 to 80 with some moderate fun here & there.
tire pressure 36 all around, ac on. car only has 3K on it after the trip.

i get around 22-24 in town, but i take it really easy in town.

also not only reset the miles but also the thing that shows how many MPG you're getting(the digital read in the gauge cluster)....There is a button to reset it in case you haven't done that you might want to give that a try....(sorry if someone else already said that i didn't feel like reading all of the posts)

His initial post stated he reseted his MPG gauge when he put in 93.

I cant judge anything after only ten miles. Fill the car. Drive several hundred miles, then post MPG and average MPH. Thanks.

Yes, 35-36psi for your tires unless you drag.
Don't rely on the damn car for your MPG...do it yourself!!!
I get 19-22 city and 26-28 highway with 93oct. fuel
