The autos in these cars are just strictly that, auto's, right? No manumatic tranny? I stopped at my Nissan dealer to check out a Z, but they weren't too helpful. They had one with a MT out front and no literature.

Nope, the autos have a manual feature. It'll hold a gear until you let off, shift, or bounce off the rev limiter. Or stop.

Nissan just calls it's auto tranny for the Z and G35C by it's description. "5-Speed Adaptive Automatic Transmission w/ Manual Shift Mode" Nissan only publishes basic information about the 5AT on it's public websites and literature. It is an advanced tranny that is comparable to some of the exotics. I'm not sure why Nissan doesn't use that fact to their advantage to market more Zs and Gs. Nissan has several patents pending on the current design.

My 04 Touring doesn't light up. I like the AT for when I'm in traffic...sometimes wish I had the MT for rippin' up the streets...maybe I'll save up and buy another Z so I can have two. Hmmm...

OK Gabez,
My Park to Drive side on the console has a dim light, but the manual section has no light. This is on the 05 touring.

And seriously , even if it lights up , you wouldn't have the time to look at it when you are doing the shifting since you might be WOT at the time , so , forward is + and backward is - , i think that's all you need to know... just some interior feature.

It tells you on the dash what gear you are in. you have to know if you are in auto or manual mode.
