The way I see M3 is glorified 3 coupe. Because its glorified they can price it $20-25K higher than the 3 and people will buy it.
In the same price range as M3, a Corvette will outperform M3 in accleration and handling on road track and is based on new platform that it doesnt share.
Lemme ask you this: what times are the M3 and 350z getting at the Nurburgring?

The M3 engine is completely different from all other 3 series engine.
M3 Engine - M S54
330 Engine - Cant remember the name, but they are for a fact different engines. So no, the M3 is not a modified 330i. =]

M3>350z
I was a huge Z fan forever. I had the last of the great ZX's , a 1983 Orange Mist 280 ZX Turbo Coupe 5sp. Loved it back in the day and would still get one if I found a good one. The fat *** blvd crusier 300ZX is what killed my interest. The 350Z is good but unfort the mgt of Nissan is not doing the car justice. It is useing that FM platform as a jack of all trades and master of none. They had to morph it so it can suit the SUV crowd w/ the FX, of which I also own currently in the 45 flavor. So then it has to be a 2+2 as well w/the G35 of which I love. The G35C Leather 6 sp is stunning IMO.
As you can see Nissan mgt has thinned out the real potential of the Z which is a shame. You cannot compete w/ a purpose built road racer like the M3 in any environment. I am obsessed w/ the M3 and I have my 3rd one and soon to be 4th when the E90 comes out. It has the feel of being cast out of a solid piece of iron block. I feel like I can beat anyone anywhere anytime as well as having the feeling of safety to back it up. A good buddy of mine that is on this board has a 350 Track. We raced probly 20x w/many variables, from a 20 mph roll, dead stop, 50-100, top speed, as well as brake tests and I have never lost, not even close. To sum up, when he drives my M , he just sits there and stares straight ahead as I attempt to drag him from the cabin.
I bought the 997 for the wife and even she still misses my E46 M but given the chance she wastes no time fireing up my Turbo monster E36M for a fun romp on the highways and byways.
