Gen I Viper verse your S/C Z...Viper will outrun you if he can drive. Its hard to speed shift in my dads viper. The gates are very close and I just ordered a new shift ****. I think that will help. I lost to a modded Firehawk with my dads 650R Hennessey cause i couldnt get traction and slow shifts.
How reliable are Vipers though?? It mean, it IS a Dodge, the true bottom feeders amongst ALL American made cars.
Here's what a proud owner had to say about his Viper on Yahoo Auto's:

this is the best car i have ever owned. it has leather interior bucket seats and a big motor. the max speed i have had it at is 120mph and still had almost a half of peddle left. i have rebult the motor and transmission and put a turbo kit on it. i want to sell the car because i have to have heart surgery
HOLD UP?? You had to rebuild the motor and tranny (I had to do the SAME THING to my Pontiac Fiero GT....BUT the Viper is $80K?? Oh HELL NO!).
WAIT A MINUTE...You're gonna sell the Viper because you're bankrupt from car repairs and don't have adequate health insurance to afford the heart surgery?? What Da f*ck??
I'm NOT trying to sound heartless, but...If you can afford an $80K car, I would hope that you have a income in the 6 figures and that your company PAYS for your health insurance.
Is it ME or am I missing something here??

If you have 29k you can buy a 1994 Viper with 132,500 miles. My dads viper has had 0 problems with 21k strong. Im in the viper club of Minnesota and no one has had any major issues with the car. Ive had more issues with my 04 350z.
Racer X show me any car model ever made that you cant find a negative post about it....Just look at our forums...Ive see more than a few disgruntled owners about Nissan quality....If you let negative comments sway you from purchasing we wouldnt buy anything...Ive been on various Viper forums over that past 6 years and Im actually impressed about how strong and durable the car is...Far from the image I initially had about all American cars...
There are alot of high milage vipers that have never had major problems...There are even a few with 700-800hp cars that have never given them major problems...There are lemons in every line...The 350z has its share from post Ive read in various places...One thing about Vipers that most will agree with is that the interior especially the Gen I/II are crappy for an 80k car and its not the best daily driver...Also the cabin heat is a problem...But as regards reliability the engine drivetrain is bullit proof....The stock engine can take 900+hp without upgrading..And the tranny is used in some of the Vipers that are making 1200+rwhp.....Cant do that if it not well built....

Viper does low 12's in the 1/4
350Z does low 14's in the 1/4
You guess from there....

The '98 is one of my favorite body styles believe it or not! I have a cast model of one.

The Vipers (earlier models) were 460 CHP not RWHP, and the Z is 300 CHP as well.

It's 460 CRANK horsepower and 300 CRANK horsepower. Figure in drivetrain loss and you get the power that is going to the ground... The Viper is obviously RWD and the Z is RWD.

Perfect Odds------- now that you just said that i kinda want you to be there so that i can make a side bet with you....... do you think before your post? if he was a monkey?? comeon dude, 1) the cars 12 years old... 2) it has no traction what so ever 3) its almost 500 lbs heavier then my car..... dont count me out so fast
SnakeBitten.......... im pretty much at stock weight.. maybe a little lighter wiht some of my mods and minus the spare and jack... His car is bone stock... oh and in this weather being in the 50's my car feels so much quicker, when i was dynoed it was i thnk 85 degrees out i make almost 2 more lbs of boost in this weather.
I do give the viper the nod, but i still think its going to be pretty close, top end i dont think i have a chance, but it will definatly be fun

Actually You may have a chance at the top end believe it or not...The early Vipers were drag limited to around 165-170mph...Aerodynamics was in the .50-55 cd if I remember correctly...Its pretty much a brick...The GTS[Gen II coupe] on the other hand will do 187-192mph flat out bone stock with a cd of .35. DO NOT Mess with those at your power level..
I think he will beat you in the 1/4 but if you run longer say 2 miles I think your turbos and better aero "may" allow you to stay with or pass on the top end...The early Vipers trapped around 12.8 @ 110-113 mph....That should give you an idea where you stand...BTW the most important factor here is: Can your friend drive that Viper properly? If he cant launch properly its over for him since he'll be spinning like crazy in first. Freakin things give you almost 380lb tq just off idle...Takes respect to drive one...One of these days Ill get one...

I’m impresses with the horsepower and torque of cars such as the Viper. On the other hand, I race against real people and not magazine numbers.

There is a old video of a guy in silver Supra that made about 435rwhp vs a stock 415 rwhp GTS Viper but it still lost 4 times in a row in the 1/4 to the Viper...They are not easy kills even in stock form unless you are really making power...They are a good measuring stick...If you can stay with or beat a "well driven" one in a turbo Z you are officially in the big leagues...

My car ran a 13.4 N/A now that i went FI i definatly think my car will be in the mid to high 12's. Thats why i think i could have a pretty good chance. As soon as i figure out which clutch and flywheel im going with all of these questions will be answerd, ooh and i used to run at Cecil every friday night you might have seen me there

You''ll beat your friend if he cant launch. So i guess you can say its a driver race. If you look on viper forums you'll see that most gen I's dyno at 370-400whp and 440-490tq stock.

Those cars are 460 and 300 at the crank. BIG difference. Drivetrain is about a 15-20% loss.
