Also, make sure your MAF is clean....I had some K&N filter oil on my LS1 MAF and it threw a code, until I cleaned it and reset the ECU

a few times before?

Some times if you peg the rev limiter, a week later you get a SES light for a misfire code...

Auto Zone will scan the code for free while you wait. Quicker than a dealer appointment.

+1

Then come back and tell us what the code is and we can help you from there. The light can come on for many reasons, instead of all the "it might be this..." scan it, tell us the code, and we can help more. Saves the dealer trip and possibly some cash.

If by chance it was your gas cap , the light won't go out immediately , you'll have to drive it for awhile before the light will go out .

Damn, not in CA anymore. They told me that they can "rent" me the equipment to do it but they won't even touch my car.

Is it a free rental like their other tools? If so, I'd still do that before going to the dealer. The scan tool they use should give a description of the code, and clear it if you want. YMMV in other areas of the country.

Hmm...not sure. I was pretty pissed that they wouldn't just pull a stupid code so I left without further conversation. I don't mind taking it to the dealer (since it was under warranty at the time) but I just wanted to find out if it was safe for me to be driving it until I could get there.

Oh well.

Unless you have other lights on like temperature or oil pressure, it should be safe to drive with the check engine light on until you can get it checked. If there is a problem, you might notice some drivability problems, but the redundancy built into modern computers will keep things running in a failure mode that is designed to prevent damage to the engine.

It would be nice if you could pull the code without a reader like you can with some Ford and Chrysler cars. I have two Fords, and you can view codes by holding the trip meter reset button while you turn on the ignition. The codes are displayed in the cluster by cycling the trip reset button. The Chryslers I've had blink the check engine light in a sequence that allows you to determine the code. This is initiated by cycling the ignition key three times quickly. I haven't seen this kind of thing on the imports for some reason.
