Default remove melted plastic from exhaust?

I ran over a hugh drop cloth of plastic on the freeway about a week ago. I saw it go under (no way to avoid it), and not come out. Pulled over immeadiatly and found it stuck to my Nismo Exhaust aft of the resonator. I pulled off as much as I could on the side of the road, and continued on. After I got home I pulled a bit more off, but all that was really left was melted all over the pipe.

Its been a week, and it still stinks everytime I drive the car. I took a paint scraper to it this morning after a particularly hard run on the freeway, to heat up the pipe of course . About 75% of it came off, but the remaining 25% is still going to stink.

Any suggestions?

I worked at a garage and about once every month some one would bring their car in complaining of a burning plastic smell. Just about everytime it was a plastic bag stuck to their exhaust somewhere. You probably got off all that your going to get off. I mean you can sit there and eventually scrape it all off, or just drive it for about a week and it will eventually all melt away. The smell wont be there forever, or more than 2 weeks for that matter. It will melt away.

I've never tried this, but can't you take a torch to it to speed the process along? Or, make sure it's cool and see if any of the usual solvents will loosen it up. Steel wool?

Good Luck

Try oven cleaner. Test it first in a small hidden area to see if it will discolor the metal. The melted plastic may have already done that. Heat up your pipe until they are very warm, not hot, to the touch and spray away. May take a couple of applications.

I took my car to the dealer thinking I was burning oil or something. They said I had a plastic bag melted to my exhaust. I dunno what they did but they said they removed most of it. There was still a smell but nowhere near as bad. The rest of the smell went away after 2-3 weeks.

I say, drive your car hard...lots of freeway on and off-ramps. Grin, and the smell will go away eventually.
