Default General Driving Question.....

When is it appropriate to shift to get maximum acceleration?? When is it appropriate to shift to get maximum speed?? I've thought that it was at 4800 rpm, where we get the maximum torque out of our cars.... It's usually at this rpm that my tires chirp into second.. Is it appropriate or desirable to shift later??

The question has been addressed in drag racing several times. As you mentioned, torque not horsepower is the key. More important than “where to shift?” is where to come into the next gear. And the answer (opinion) is near the top of the torque curve. To complicate matters, mods alter the stock torque curve. Also the peak torque is different in every gear.

at 4800rpm your getting maximum acceleration so you wouldn't want to change at that rev, I think best time to shift is at maximum power or when it just drops off

with the gearing in the z you should shift at redline, because you end up at the peak power in the next gear.
