Can we "return" extended warranty? and should I keep it?
I quote a fellow member who posted this yesterday:
This response was in regards to the window motor thread, but this concern about the extended warranty is exactly how I feel in general! I paid somewhere in that range ($1400-$1600) and am trying to justify it. I have an '05 Z with 17500 miles on it; bought brand new one year ago. First of all, can I "return" the extended warranty if I wanted to? And second of all, should I keep it? Do you guys think it's worth it? Thoughts pls!

I am thinking of refunding my extended warranty because I spent $1600 for it and I am having a hard time justifying it.

I never even thought of that. I bought my Z in September, and didn't get the extended warranty. I have a company car to do commuting and driving in snow, and the Z is my fun car. In the 3 months I had it I only have 1300 miles on it, so I won't be killing it.
I've been in A LOT of dealerships and delt with A LOT of their customers. You hear many stories about how their extended warranty didn't cover such and such. I just chose to role the dice and hope nothing major happens to it.

Most likely you can “return” the extended warranty. The refund amount is prorated.
I do not advise buying a extended warranty. And my recommendation is simply based on the law of probability. The chances that you will get your money back (in warranty work) is less than 50 percent. After all companies who sell extended warrantees make money(they take in more money than they pay out).

If you return it within 90 days, you get a full refund. Its prorated after that.
If you have a lien on the car, they will send the check to your finance company as a principle payment. I was happy to ditch it because I bought the Silver which really didn't give me jack and I paid like $1500.

Consumer Reports does not recommend buying extended warranty in general. Since the 350z is pretty reliable (except for the tire problems in the 2003 and 2004 models), its a pretty bad bet to side with extended warranty.

i got the 72 month 75k mile warranty gold w/ $50 deductable for $725 I think. Sometimes I wish I didn't have it so I could hard core mod my Z but on the other hand owning the warranty will keep me from selling the car till i have at least 60k miles and also keep me from spending lots of money on mods.

I finance cars and yes you can cancel at anytime , the dealer gets the warranty for half of what you pay for it...thus some of their profit. Most warrantys are prorated so cancel now Most require you to go to the dealer and sign a cancelation form and date it that is what the prorated cancel date is based off of. I would cancel it also I will never buy it, if it doesnt break within 36,000 miles more than likely you will be ok anyway.

I paid $1500 for the 0 deductible 84month/100k warranty. I am not sure if I am going to keep it, but for resale, it will be a lot easier to sell if you tell the person they have another 2 years and 30,000 miles left of warranty. I am covered until November of 2009 and 65,000 more miles.

ok i was just quoted at 2500 dollars for what they called their top warranty (the gold whatever i think is what it is). From reading all your numbers this now seems outrageous. I honestly do plan on getting a warranty because being in college, i can handle monthly payments no problem, its those crazy 1 grand 2 grand etc out of no where that kill me(hence why i got rid of my supra for the z). Now all these places that are quoting you guys at such lower rates would i be able to call up and purchase from them instead?? If so, how would i go about doing that, what would i need?

Extended warranty is BS. Did you know you have a $90 deductable per problem with the "Gold Plan"? I had a window seal go bad, it would have costs $90 for Nissan to "look at it" and if covered then it would be replaced. If, not they keep the $90 for "looking" and I pay out of pocket. My dealer is gay, horrible service the **** service adviser wouldnt even tell me if it was covered under my plan and I know they have lists for that $hit. Instead of doing that, I bought the piece for $110 from another dealer, and installed myself in 5 minutes. Only reason I have it still is incase I nuke another tranny.

nope, bad idea. first you dont have rodeside assistance on the factory warranty, plus
you should know that the factory warranty is only for 3/36000, and everyone knows that once the factoy warranty expires problems start happening.
dont do it man keep it 1600 is a small price to keep your z on good condition.

In general I look down on extended warranties...but the Z has so many issues that I think it's a good idea. Looks like you've gotta replace window regulators, bose head units, and trannies on a pretty regular basis. If you don't want to worry about paying for that $hit the warranty makes sense. Wish I had gotten one.
