Default Best RPM for Gas Mileage

What is the best RPM to shift at to attain the best mpg? I thought it was the lower the rpm, the better the gas mileage, but i seem to be getting better gas mileage when I rev a little higher, around 3k to 4k. This is for daily driving purposes. thx in advance

0 ofcourse I would say that. Thats where I shift most the time. But when I get that high. I think about taking it to redline I think someone said something about this. Did you try the search. I am not sure though...

Me too, as soon as I hit 4k, I start to feel the massive power and get tempted to floor it to redline.

Someone actually cares about MPG for the Z. Maybe a different car may do better in this area. Normally people don't associate good milage with a Z.

The high fuel economy was a major factor into my decision of buying a Z. A S2000 has just about the same fuel economy, but most of the cars in the Z’s class aren’t particularly efficient. Take a look at the WRX Sti, Lancer EVO, and RX-8 if you want to drink a little more at the pump.

Sorry to spoil your fun, but your car (Z) is reasonably fuel efficient compared to most other cars on the road. Especially when you look at the soccer moms and their POS SUVs. You should be doubling some of them on the freeways!!

Now to the question: Its usually safe to assume that the lower you shift the better MPG you will get. There are exceptions to this (there always are), because your engine will have a particular point where it is most efficient and you want to stay as much as possible in that zone. Shifting around 3k would be a safe bet!

If you really want good fuel economy, pump up those tires, clean your air filter, and learn how to not use the brake!!

If you're interested in “increasing fuel economy,” suggestions are hidden in your owners manual under...umm...let me think...”increasing fuel economy.”

5th gear 2.3krpms (this may sound stupid but i assume theres 1/4 marks between each rpm if i remember correctly)

That gets me about 27mpg on highway, on city, i dont even bother it just goes down to 19mpg.

on the highway pretty much 70-80mph will net you 28mpg(atleast for me). In the city it just chugs the gas. Whats great is the drive to my gf's place(50miles) has 17 miles on one road with 13 stopsigns(yey!!) then I have to drive through a tiny city through about 5-6 stoplights(another yey!!) then finally get to drive on the highway with lots of random jumping bugs(yey again!!). I get an average of 22mpg getting to her house and lots of fun bug splats on my windshield. I think the worst was one bug flew right into the drivers side of the windshield but didn't splat like normal and it's blood started coming out and streaking up the windshield as I was driving

Maybe not an s2000 but more like a civic. If you like performance + good MPG pick the Si.

Hmm you can shift at 2000rpm's in most gears and cruise at 1500rpm's from what I've heard it should be safe. But its frustrating (like having sex but only going in the first inch) and you should just buy a beater honda if you're that concerned about fuel economy.
