Default Tow car to Nissan to have key made?!

I lost my damn keys and theyre telling me I have to have the damn car towed to Nissan so they can program the key to my car! Can't they just lookup my key code and program it without actually towing the car? This whole process is gonna cost me a FORTUNE! Tow, Key, Key programming, Key pad, key pad programming.. DAMNIT!Q!!@ IM SO PISSED RIGHT NOW

I'm going to have TWO spares made so this NEVER happens again!

Thanks for letting me know about this. I would have thought that Nissan could make a key from the key code.

BTW what happened to your spare key?

I thought the same thing. Infact someone from Nissan when I called told me this, yet when I went there to have the key made they said I had to have it towed in so they could hook it up to some computer or some ****..

I never received a spare when I baught the car :-/

Sorry to get a bit side tracked, but do dealers always make you two keys when you order a spare made? Cause I was going in to have one key made but when I jumped in the car there was one in the ignition and one in the center console.

HAH! I wish! It's gonna be like $100 bucks to tow the damn car to the nearest dealer. Having them come to me would be just as likely as president bush calling me personally to offer me a place to stay while my house is destroyed from katrina... aint gonna happen

Their are a few lock smith who have the equipment to come to you and do this. They generally are just about as expensive as the dealer but you then don't have to be towed. Some even carry remotes.

Well..FYI for those thinking about spares...you still have to go to the dealer....because when you get the spare made, they have to reprogram all of your existing keys at the same time...apparently you get all new control codes/frequencies. Guess that's to prevent anyone who turns up with the old key (if lost or stolen or something) from getting into your car and driving it away.

They want 250 for the key and the programming. Now that I think about it.. after the tow and the key and the programming it will probably come out to the close to the same thing I should have just told them to do it..

I locked my keys in the car (damn power locks hehe) while on vacation, had a friend drive me to the dealer and they were able to cut a spare that would open the car (not start it) after showing them my id about $7.

I got two sets of keys and remotes as well as a thrid key that is maroon with a plastic sleeve on it. Also attached the ring is a metal stamped tag with a number on it. I would have though that was the key code used for ordering new keys?

See I thought the same thing. I thought they just needed the key code.

There is a chip in the key. They have to program the keys to the ECU. It must be done by the dealer.
I have had it done twice now. First time there was some TSB problem when I picked the car up. Second time was after a blown ECU. It may be inconvenient but its life.

Dumb questions but how do you get in the car if there are no keys (assuming you lost the remote)?

xNeo,

A good locksmith can make a key right at your car, just using a key blank and a file. I had it done. But, as mentioned in a previous post, you won't be able to start the car.
