someone (alberto) in a similar thread said learning how to drive manual properly, if you think about it, makes a lot of sense.

Yes, I'd have to agree. Driver training goes a LONG way.

Agree w/the above, but an additional "downside" to changing the gear ratio, at least for someone who does a lot of i-state driving at 80-85 mph, is the increased noise and decreased engine durability of turning higher rpms consistently.

i don't think the extra 300rpm would hurt engine durability.. but point taken.

3.9 gears or save for fi... but if you think you may one day go FI don't get the gears.

you are better off saving money you would spend on NA mods for FI. You could spend $600 for headers, $100 for intake, $200 for test pipes $900 for exhaust $100 for a plenum spacer, etc (about $2000 not counting install) and maybe pick up 30-40whp ($50 per hp best case) or spend $4300 (not counting install) on a single turbo (price going up i think) and pick up like 120-140whp out the box ($31 per hp best case).

But if you have the money get the NA mods that will be able to be used later in a FI Z.

Why does everybody hate 3.9 with FI? FWIW I have two other FI cars, both with 4.285 fd...

It certainly is less load, which is bad for FI.. And I realize that first gear may be dubbed "useless" but.. every thing else is MUCH more useable, imo.

davidv, I have read a lot of the posts, but I get lost. It seems like you can go down a rabbit hole with the mods, and 99% of the people here love it. I'm just looking for a simple one-time investment and was hoping someone could cut through the clutter for me (which you all have, thanks!).

So where does one buy a plenum spacer and pop charger? Is there a brand I should get? Do these things just give you more HP with no downside, or are there trade-offs?
I got my 3/8th's inch Motordyne Spacer from hydrazine (screen name on this forum). He is the creator of it and if you search for him or Motordyne you'll find a link to his website. Mine was only $200 when I bought it. The popcharger I would just search around online. I got mine for $120 shipped. Both were simple to install and I'm not a gear head either, .
