Question Extended Use Oil

I currently use Royal Purple 5/30 full synthetic oil. I've been changing it every 3,000 miles even though it says you can drive it for 6,000 miles before changing. Am I changing it too soon or does it depend on my driving style which I would say is lots of stop and go plus freeway high speed. Its about time to change oil again if I continue to change every 3. Should I or just wait till I get to 6k? Also I saw a commercial about some other oils that go in increments of 7k and 15k. Is the Z meant for these long term oils or will it collect too much engine metals, dirt.. ect that the filter won't be able to retain. Somebody once was explaining how the filters work and that when you floor the car the filter is designed to open up and basically releases its contents in the process for the good of the engine b/c if not then the engine might starve from lack of adequate lubrication in the process. So that's my 2nd question ... What is the best/recommended oil filter and who sells it. Thanks.

I have a warrenty i believe for my warrenty to stay in intact i must change at 3,000 miles no matter what, regardless of what oil is in it.

If i wanted to void it i would go 6k miles like royalpurple says i can do, but i wont be doing that.

I dunno up to you really i want my warrenty to stay intact.

I wouldnt run that Mobil 1 extended oil in my Z, but let me tell you something. My GF accidently bought the 7500 mile oil. She then didnt change her oil for over 5000 miles. This stuff is supposed to have more detergents in it to keep it clean. I checked her oil at 5000+ miles, and I was SHOCKED to see it wasnt even dirty, it was cleaner than my Mobil 1 synthetic after 1500 miles. It was super clean(still golden color), and it hadnt even burned away. Just thought you'd like to know. For you guys that sometimes go over your oil change limit for a few dollars more it really seemed to work.

You don't have to change your oil every 3K miles to maintain the warranty; check with the maintainance manual for their recommended oil change interval/mileage. Depending on your driving conditions, I think there's even a recommended 7,500 interval. Check the oil when you change it, if it's clean go a little longer next time. Personally, I think 3K miles is over kill in today's engines!

Royal Purple every 3k miles....you are wasting money. I think most people do this because of the self fulfillment that it gives them about their car. If it makes you feel better then do it...is it unnecessary? Yes!

Synthetic oils generally have none of very little parafin in them which is what usually breaks down to form sludge commonly found with mineral oils. However, even with synthetic if you notice the odor of fuel in your oil you still need to change it often even with synthetic. Oil mixing with fuel is common and it will have detrimental effects on your engine.

SGP racing and other tuning shops recommend for forced induction Valvoline straight 30 weight oil. They use it in all their cars regarless of it has 500rwhp or over 1000rwhp. They say that they like it best because the ring seat better with it than say synthetic oil.

My cousin is a NISSAN Master Mechanic. First thing you need to make sure of is your oil filter. Do not use anything except WIKS or if you want to keep your warantee NISSAN filter. My cousin has seen three cars this year alone that were oil starved and distroyed because of filter elements seperating. Fram was the fault in two of the three he saw. We talked about oil changes and agree that the reason you change your oil at 3K miles is to get rid of the contaminates. It was interesting that we both had the same theory. Sure the extended oil may lube the components properly but, getting the contaminates out of there is the real reason to change your oil. I'm trying to change my synthetic every 3K but it it gets to 5K before I change it all should be still squeeky clean by 200K. I would not go to 7500 miles like the manual suggests for Sch2 cars.

thx for the input so far. Is it possible or advisable to simply change the filter to a WIKS and not replace the oil for another 2-3k when it should be according to the oil's recommendation? My reasoning is that if the oil is in fact clean then i won't replace it, rather just get a new filter in there and use it until its recommended change interval of 6k. The only problem i see is how to change just the filter.... won't it leak all out if the oil isn't drained first? Never attempted that so perhaps somebody can give me a heads up if I should go that route.

yup....a lot of the high performance European cars are like that....Porsches are like that too....if you don't drive them HARD, aka, if you drive your Porsche like a grandma, your engine will choke...you have to open those cars up...

synthetic oil will last for 6000, but your OEM oil filter in the Z will only last for 3000, so if you're going that long, remember to get aftermarket filters
