My first Drifting experience-pics and video
On Dec 4th of last month I attended a Daily Drifter (www.dailydrifter.com) event in San Antonio that was sponsored by SPL Parts (www.splparts.com). Basically just a practice session so I thought I'd give it a shot. Knew it would be tough on tires but thought it would be a fun and challenging learning experience. I've spent a fair amount of time on racetracks and thought this would be a good lesson in car control.
They ran 2 tracks in the one parking lot-one short second gear course and a longer 3rd gear course. They ran 3 run groups and 30 minute sessions. We ran the short course for 30 minutes, the long course for 30 and then had a 30 minute rest.
First few runs were ok for me but I spent a lot of time fighting the wheel. Had an instructor ride with me who advised me to let go of the wheel once the slide begins and let the wheel turn itself. That advice helped considerably along with getting comfortable in the slide. The short course was fairly simple but the long course was much trickier. I'd get the slide going well in 3rd gear but once I slowed I'd downshift to second and that caused several spins. Going into it faster and keeping the pedal mashed helped hold the slide in third gear much longer and get me almost to the turning point to switch back to a right hand turn. Definitely a tough transition to make.
Here are a couple action shots:
Here is a pic of my new APS Tallboy plenum that I painted gunmetal and installed a few days prior to the event. Got it from SPL Parts.
Here is a pic of my new 5Zigen Miracle exhaust and new 5Zigen ProRacer GN+ wheels also picked up from SPL.
Pic of some half shredded tires.
Here is a Pic of John Yim, one of the organizers of the event about to take Kuah's 10 second z32 out for a run.
Here are a couple of vids taken by a friends digicam. I have a bunch more vids taken on my camcorder but my firewire cable is on the fritz and I can't seem to download. The mufflers have the silencers out in these vids if anyone is wondering what the 5Zigen Miracle exhaust sounds like.
spun out on the big course:

half decent run on the small course:

All in all it was a fun experience. Surprisingly there was still tread remaining on my tires after a full day of drifting, about 4000 miles on the the street, a weekend DE at Texas World Speedway and another weekend at Motorsport Ranch. My Fondmetal 9x wheels and tires are for sale if anyone is interested now that I have the ProRacers.
I definitely have a new found respect for drifters and the sport. The car control necessary to control such slides as they do is impressive. It's hard enough to do it on a track by yourself let alone running tandem as they do in some events. I think i held my own for a rookie, but I have a ton to learn if I continue with these events. It's definitely worth giving it a try if you can afford the tires!

The second vid is pretty cool, nicely done. I think it would be pretty fun if the track were wet -- similar sliding effect, with less wear on the tires.
By the way, what's your wheel setup? 19''R, 18''F ?
