Default Almost Died . . . PLEASE watch for black ice

Well its been a long hectic night and of course something had to top it all off. I took a right off of an exit onto a main road. I was driving right around 40-45 in 5th gear, not accelerating, not turning, just normal striaght driving. All of a sudden I see a dark patch in the road and as my back wheels drive over it, it kicked out and I lost all control. I tried my best to countersteer out of it but it was imposible. Well two 360s later, I was a little shaken up to say the least but me and the Z are ok. How I didn't hit anything is beyond me, luckily there were no other cars on the road but it was a narrow, two lane road with curbs on both sides, how I didn't even hit a curb is amazing.

It wasn't really avoidable but it goes to show that in the winter time you just need to be that much more aware when driving, especially at night. Be safe!

BTW lets not start with the "Z doesn't belong out in the winter" comments. At this point they are pretty useless to me.

do you have traction/vdc and if so, did it not go off?

glad you're ok... had that experience in my other car 2 winters ago, luckily it was a 4 lane highway and I used up all of it...

People say the Z doesn't belong in the snow because of black ice, etc., but if you were in another vehicle (like an SUV for example) and you hit black ice like you did last night, would the same thing have happened?

I'm just curious... we don't get any snow where I live so I don't know.

ps: glad to hear you are okay

Yes(SUV)...but if he slid on the black ice and regained traction while sliding sideways, he would have put it on its side (SUV).

i hit black ice one time passing through Ohio on a major interstate, there were at least half a dozen cars and trucks spinning out of control....some side ways ....some upsidedown in the gutter...some facing on coming traffic. i was in my brand new red 4x4 Toy truck about 50 yards away and i knew i couldn't hit my brakes but had to let it slide straight into this road block of vehicles. Then out of nowhere, like Moses parting the red sea....i found a narrow clearance right smack in the middlle of this natural disaster as i was approaching. My Toy sailed through and i found myself spared. There was no doubt in mind then there was a God.

I didn't have traction control on at the time. With the sand on the roads and the aftermarket wheels, it goes off all the time and I've founf myself in dangerous situations some times because of it. Even if it was on though, it wouldn't have done anything, there is no defense against ice.

If I was in a larger vehicle I dont think the outcome would have been the same. I definitely think I would have flipped. The only thing I think that would have helped me would have been front wheel drive. Because of the Zs power and light weight the rear end kicked out almost immediately.

Try using Ice Skates instead aftermarket wheels next time. Maybe that'll help

glad you are ok

best thing to do if you happen to see black ice before you hit it is to take your foot of the gas. you may still lose control a lil bit but it wont be as bad..

also never brake!!!! once you are over the black ice use the gas or brake depending what you car is doing...

no car ( FWD OR RWD EVEN AWD) will do well on ice. snow is a diff story but ice is not a cars friend.

once again glad you are ok

traction control will not help regain control. it would help by killing engine power if you dont let off the gas. but when sliding, physics take control. a human cant walk on ice without sliping, so cars are at the mercy of their weight, speed, and area of frozen pavement.

I’ve always wondered when the term black ice was introduced, and for what purpose. Ice is ice. And what if you are driving on concrete and ice. Is that black or white ice?

On black ice, letting off the gas is the same as hitting the brakes. What you need is to maintain your wheel speed so that you have at least a chance of keeping control of the vehicle. Try to keep the same speed, neither accelerating or decelerating until you are past it. Easy to say, hard to do!

I agree, Ice is Ice and it's not worth a damn to drive on. But, at least here in OK, black ice is hard to distinguish from just water on the road, whereas (white ice?) is a lot more apparent for what it is.

It is called black ice because you can't see it till it is too late... I of course know all about it being from Georgia and all.
