Default SCREWED by INSURANCE AGENT

So we call our agent before buying the Z and they give us a quote $25 more than our 02 Xterra so we are prepared to make a larger monthly payment. I also went to the local office and requested the qoute in person with the VIN.

1 month later we get a bill... that is DOUBLE the difference between the Xterra and the Z.

Convinced this is a mistake... I call and play phone tag with this agent. His final answer was that they quoted me on a preferred rate and when the "state office" or underwriter returned the policy they issued a standard rate (apprently having a 350Z is on their sports car list and disqualifies us for a "preferred" rate).... I told him I didn't care what the problem was on thier side, I wanted them to bill me what they quoted.

This agent calls back and leaves a voicemail saying they can't do any better on my rate even though the quote was their mistake. His only consolence was "I have some friends in the insurance business and can call around to see if I can get you a better rate."

It doesn't matter that we have made a combined $5000 in premiums in the last 6 years and our house is on this policy... they can't do any better on my rate. If this was a new policy they qouted someone, it could be reported to the state for bait and switch. What bull****....

I think my next step is telling him that he will need to call his friends and get a better rate and shop on my own. Basically my rate went from $63mo to $119 with minimal coverage.

I pay $645 every six months for my Z. It's less per month than my mercedes which is a safer and harder to steal car.

If you signed the contract stating that you agree to the original rate quoted then they definitely need to honor it. Otherwise, take them to court.

Just make sure you have records of the transaction.

And since everyone is posting this:

I pay $668 every 6 months for full coverage on my 2004 350Z and liability coverage for my 1990 Ford PGL.

seriously, I just have to say this, I work in insurance! Please do not use the word "full coverage" to describe your policy! Frankly no such things exists, sorry but this is a big pet peeve and such a blatant missuse!!

take it easy, people are prolly using full coverage to mean something different than you. When i say it I mean comp and collision which i have on my z but not my 500 dollar beater.

Of course, the best part is that insurance is a service that you pay for. I'd be tempted to take all of my business elsewhere. I've never ended up with a higher rate than what I was quoted initially. And for the record, the Z part of my insurance bill runs roughly $1,000 annually for $500,000 in CSL coverage, but that's one component of a master policy for three cars, our main residence and umbrella insurance.

Shop around- your auto and homeowners- until you get an acceptable price.

Certainly not the best example of customer services that I have heard, but far from deceitful. You are not insured until you pay the premium. And paying the premium is voluntary.

so go somewhere else. he misrepresented the actual premium due to his misunderstanding of company policy.

to the guy that said take em to court-

over a $25 dollar/mo discrepancy? thats just a stupid waste of their time, that case would be thrown out.

Yeah, my insurance did the same thing. They quoted my a premium that was about $20 more than I was paying before so I was ok with that. Then I get a bill that is $50 more than they said per month. I call and they tell me that they adjusted the rating on my car and it went from a 23 to a 28 and it caused it to rise $49 dollars a month. They said there is nothing they could do and they didn't know that it was going to go up. Geez

Actually, it's $56/month. Or $672/year.

Might be a waste of time, but it's also a waste of his money if they don't allow him to cancel the contract.

Unfortunately, this is a very common problem. My wife (who works for a large insurance provider) deals with this on a daily basis. She gives a quote based on the information she is provided by the customer and the computer spits out a number. Then, when they write the car, lo and behold, the rate is higher, for one reason or another. All you can do is shop around.
