Default What is the steering wheel trim made of?

Those 2 aluminum looking pieces on the steering wheel, what are they made of? Are they painted plastic or actual aluminum? The clear coat on mine is starting to peel and I want to take the clear coat off entirely and respray it when my new steering wheel comes in (more on that later).

Based on what they are made of, what's the best way to get the clear coast off? I figured if they were real aluminum I could use a really fine grit sandpaper and do it that way. Any suggestions?

my guess would be a metallic acrylic, I wouldn't try the sand paper until you're sure what material it's made of.
