1.Is it "OK" to speed shift the Z?
Sometimes, I pull it out of gear (with out the clutch) when there's no resistance. I'm not even sure if that's cool.
If it IS ok to speed shift...does anyone have any tips?

2. Is it "OK" to rest your hand on the shift ****?
I know on some american cars there is a plastic guide rail that can deform when hot. Because of this, It is not a good idea to rest your hand on the shift ****. I don't put alot of pressure on it....like I said, I just like to rest my hand on it.

umm.. I would nevr shift without the use of your clutch.. what the hell is the point of that?? Please use your clutch, or be prepared to replace things that you brake..

now as far as the resting your hand question....what do you mean "think about it"? I have and I thought it was OK but an american mussel car enthusiast told me about some problems he hat with his shifter after resting his hand on it....I tbelieve I touched on that above.

 

I speed shift every now and then just because I'm too lazy to use my clutch. I can get every gear up to 5th. It just grinds 5th lol.

 

I have a manual and I am just interested in speed shifting..come on people, I thought this was a forum to help one another.

things like this make me want to shy away from buying a used car (any car!).
Just use the clutch, it's there for a reason.

 

I would have to agree that speed shifting is a bad idea in any car. Can you do it sure but there may or may not be reprecussions down the road.

 

looks like if you get a "dog-clutch" synchronizer you can do it....


I actualy don't care to f up my Z over exploration of the subject..that is why I am asking (no such thing as a dumb question I've been told)...I just have always wanted to know more about the term/technique "speed shifting"

...If so, maybe you can tell me what you know about instead of telling me what to do with my car....sure they said to use the clutch but that in no way helps me understand speed shifting and how it MIGHT be done in the Z.

Well now, you wouldn’t be asking these silly questions if you really thought it was “ok”…Sure, no problem forcing/rubbing the synchros out of their gears. The rounder they get, the easier shifting will be. You can always push on the stick to hold it in gear when it starts to pop out...
Here, it’s good practice for when the synchros are grinded round and you’ll have to keep pushing on the stick. No chance the forks will wear down/bend from that because, even if they’re always in contact with the synchros cones, oil is being splashed everywhere to lubricate them. Metal on metal lasts for ever!

 

I know what "speed shifting" is (most commonly referred to as power shifting). You can do it without damaging your transmission, but unless you match the rpms PERFECTLY, you are going to do some grinding. I would recommend using the cluth and learning to shift faster before your other method.

Powershifting is effectively shifting without fully releasing the clutch. You keep the gas pedal down while you only use about half the clutch travel to shift hard and fast. This is incredibly hard on a transmission, and in fact simply will not work on most transmissions. Without fully pushing in the clutch on most cars, you can neither pull the shifter out of gear nor put it into a new one (and it will grind as you try).
