Default Question About Junk Yards....

The little hatch part of the storage bin by the rear speakers snapped. Nissan wants me to pay 150 for the damn storage pocket, so I thought maybe a junk yard may have one. There have to be some dead 350z's =(

Here is my questions. How do junk yards work? Never been to one, never been interested in one until now. Do you have to pay per part you get from there? Can you just wonder around lookin through different cars?

Can someone enlighten me? Im in NJ... and do not know where any junk yards are either =\

I own a salvage yard in Houston. It works just like any auto parts store except the parts are used and the price is negotiable. Some yard will let you walk around and some won't. We let people in the back accompanied by an employee but only to look.

Yeah, it really varies from yard to yard. I've been to some that let me wander around alone till I found what I was looking for, others that sent an employee out with me, and one that wouldn't let me go out in the yard at all. Usually interior panels and stuff like that aren't too expensive.

You'll just have to call some yards or go out to some and see how they run things. Good luck with your search.

Junkyards around my area work just like an auto parts store. They use computers and everthing to datalog all the parts. The only thing is, if you're looking for a 350Z part, they might try and hussle you by overcharging. My dad and I went around looking for a new side mirror for his SUV.... the a$$hole tried to sell a completely different mirror for more than what a new one would cost. Alot of scumbags run junkyards (no offense to TK2005)

Hey,
There is a junk yard right off Rt. 46 heading towards parsippany (coming from willowbrook mall). They allow you to go in the yard and take anything that you need. Then you bring it up to this check-out place where an individual will appraise a price on it. That is how this one works.

is there any good website that you can search for junkyards, or is the phone book the best method?

i own a salvage yard too. I do not let people come in and take parts off because they tend to pry and break everything else just to get what they need. We deal mainly with dealers and reputable shops. Most walk in customers do not know how much $$ it costs us to buy cars from auctions and how much to pay for a used part. Dealers and body shops pay top dollar for used oem parts. Small plastic pieces we usually let go cheap, but do remember even people who own junkyards have bills to pay and families to support. Dont think just cuz a part is used its goin to be dirt cheap or even free. Cost of running a junkyard is very high so feed me im hungry
