I would think the rev limiter would kick in? I guess its just while your already in gear when the limiter kicks in not when you down shift.

I did it twice before as well on my old tranny... Both times were on attempted 4->5 shifts at 100mph or so and I accidentally went to 3.

Don't think that's what caused the tranny to blow up, but quite possibly? It was a 3rd gear grind! No issues with the engine block, however. No lost oil, etc. after 60k miles.

If that's so, I guess I've been driving with floating valves for about 30k miles. I had my first tranny replaced 30k ago (and this happened on my first tranny).

Jesus, thats not something ill ever do again. In my old car i did that and the RPM needle jumped DEEP into redline, and the fuel cutoff and i heard a horrid grinding noise. Ill never go into red line again.

I've hit ~8g before too when a bolt connecting my shifter to the tranny came loose during a hard shift and I ended up in the wrong gear. I think your car should be fine. I did it about a year ago and I never noticed any problems. If anything serious was going to happen it would have happend immidiatly I think. When I found out what had happend later at Nissan I had the guy put loctite on it so it wouldn't happen again.

umm... i was in panic mode so that was out of the picture for me
but to my faintest memory, it resembled something similar to the s2000 at redline

i say that because the nismo exhaust basically becomes totally quiet after 3500+ rpm and let the engine take over the talking...
and u can hear the engine so clearly

Just wondering why you would stop a car in an emergency by down shifting/Heel toe bliping and putting the car in second gear? That makes no sense at all.

i was in 3rd at ~80mph
shoving the gear to 2nd and brake would be engine braking and regular braking combined... so it would be shorter distance
but i think some track specialists might disagree but at least it feels that im stopping harder

You've got to be fukin kidding me. No matter how hard you try to make the car stop, the tires are the only thing that are stopping you. No the engine, not the brakes. Brakes can exert more force into stopping you than the engine, more than the tires can even stick. Ur a retard for even trying to stop in an emergency like that. If u were doing 3rd at 80mph, u were fukin around and had to stop in an emergency,

I buried the needle myself. I was on the interstate in steady traffic and wanted to have fun with a BMW. I was in 6th doing around 80 when I went to down shift into 4th. So adding some throttle in the downshift, I accidently put it into 2nd and aggressively let the clutch out.

Ping, there went the redline, and no rev limiter can stop that.

I was new to driving a manual, and I only had 500 miles on the car. I almost broke into tears! So far 23,000 miles later, I haven't noticed anything. So I wouldn't worry too much.

It's a good excuse to start saving for a built engine though.

I did that once. Was racing some car (at the track) and went from 3rd back to 2nd.... OPS... I realized very quick and just coasted through the line lol.
