I just took delivery of my '06 Z two weeks ago, and in the shopping process I also looked at Evo and STi. I was looking to spend $28-31k on a "sports" car, so those were my options. No real loss there. Plus, now I have a great excuse to not have to drive anyone around! Z has good straight-line acceleration and drives well in the twisties. It is naturally aspirated, which typically means higher reliability than a turbocharged car. It also looks more refined and mature to me than the almost-rally-cars. As a young 24 year old 'professional' I would rather be seen stepping out of my Z than a boy-racer Evo or STi with 747 wing on the back when I get to work in the morning.
I also think that as sporty as the Z is, it's a lot less high-strung than the other two. I feel like the Z makes for a much friendlier daily driver (unless it's snowing, of course!). Gas mileage, fuel octane requirement and power output ( I think....) are about the same for all three cars, so your annual gas budget should be about the same. A 2006 Enthusiast model can be had easily around $28,500 (near invoice price) or you could pay upwards of $32,000 for one of the other two. I won't try to preach only Z, but I think for performance vs. appearance vs. build quality vs. creature comforts vs. price, the Z wins.
Oh, I forgot to mention how fun it is to drive. Take a few tight-radius on-ramps at 55 MPH during your test drive. Have fun!!!!

Reliability is pretty solid. I drive mine daily unless there is snow on the roads in PA. After snow, once the roads dry, I'm back in it. I have 63k on my 03 and I had the tranny replaced (not what you wanted to hear) under warranty. The 05-06 haven't had as many tranny problems either. I am pretty sure they replaced my 03 tranny with an 05. I've had 0 problems in 40k since the replacement.
This point really hit home as well: I also looked at STi and Evo and I just thought it looked better stepping out of a Z when I went to meet a Controller or CFO for lunch. Obviously if you aren't in a "professional" position this isn't a big deal, but many of us here are.
And the last paragraph also rings true. I mentioned I daily drive my Z and it is a very comfortable car to drive. Rougher, more compact ride than a Mercedes sedan of course, but I've driven the Z 750 miles one way with only one stop for gas/bathroom. I'd say that's pretty comfortable. Further, the car is so EASY to drive. The tranny is a bit "notchy", but other than that the car is just so easy to drive. Very well balanced. It can impress others in the upper RPMs or get away from you in the upper RPMs if you aren't careful (so you know it has plenty of power) however under 4,000RPM there is little to worry about. It's very safe and sound and you don't even realize you are doing 85-90 passing cars as the 6-speed churns it out so easily.
This is a problem when you get 4 tickets in a year like me however and go licenseless for 2 months. Boo.
Evo is cool in its own right, but if you are sick of the Evo/Sti, the Z is one of the few logical "next steps".
