Tinting...

I too am looking to get my windows tinited. I have been quoted $175 and $140. I do not know what kind of film or warrenties those come with. My question is about how the tinting is actually done. r26 maybe you can help:
1. Since the window is slightly down when the door is open, do you push the button in on the inside of the door so that you can tint the whole window? If so, does opening/closing the door mess up the tint at the bottom since you are not supposed to roll down your window for 3 days?
Otherwise there will be a strip at the bottom of the window when the door is closed that is not tinted. I know it is small but it will get on my nerves and to someone walking by it will look like a bad tint job since the tint is short.
Well r26 posted before I replied. I am assuming this fixes the problem w/ the automatic roll down?

Our price to tint a Z is normally $160, which even I will admit is an average price. Might I suggest you guys who may be interested check out the group buy I offered in the Mid-A forum. There is no need to remove any panels for any reason, and the tint can be applied correctly to the side windows, despite them cracking when you open the door and should not effect the film if done correctly... No matter what ANY tinter tells you. This is actually becoming extremely common on many frameless windows and should not be any problem for an experienced tinter. LIFETIME warranties are pretty much the standard now and Im not even aware of a film manufacturer that offers a nice quality film and doesn't offer the Lifetime Warranty. The gap at the top edge should be barely visisble to the naked eye up close. From even a small distance the gap should be so minimal that most will not even notice it. Our Goal is to look as factory as possible.
You should be paying for the QUALITY AND EXPERIENCE of the tinter NOT the "premium" film BS that ALOT of people are getting. If a tinter is willing to attach his name and shop name on a job with the "poorer" quality films, I would immediately question the quality of his work and what he deems acceptable. IMO.
As far as films go, there are many quality films out there. My personal preferance is Global, SunTek, or Llumar depending on the application. Everyona asks about 3M, but Im just not a persoanl fan of their films. Their adhesives are good but their films are questionable in my opinion.

I paid $120 bucks...took about an hour and I couldn't be happier with the results. They have a lifetime warantee -- I think the brand was Johnson? but I may have forgotten....Either way, if you get a lifetime warantee your set-- $240 is double what I paid.
I paid $150 here in FL they took 1 hour. It was great because the front windows don't have a gap. The guy who tinted the windows passed a tool that looked like a knife sharpener trough the edges. He told me that not too many people do that, he says it looks the best but if you don't know how to do it you'll screw up the glass......
$145 here for Solar Gaurd and the guy came to my house and did it right in my garage. He didn't pull the door panels (I'm glad); he just worked the tops loose a bit and ran the film under the lip.

Does it matter where a person in the US is located? Seems that people in the west are getting quoted cheaper than in the other places. Is climate a pricing factor?

I called just yesterday to get a quote as I want to get the tint done the day after I get the car. I was quoted $220 for the 10% tint I want (and if I choose to get the 3M clear bra applied from them too, they will take 20% off the tint price). Fully metal-based film (the dye-based was $180). Lifetime warranty against fading, peeling, and bubbling...no questions asked.
Honestly, if a tint shop doesn't offer you all of the above, they are in the wrong business. Feel free to tell them that.

Damn...looks like everyone is getting quoted from 100 to 200 tops. I asked a friend and he said he got his for 100. But the place closed down. I think that I might hold off on tinting until I have a decent price and a place that will do it in less than 5 hours. It doesnt seem to fit my schedule to nicely. I mean if it was 200 I would probably do it but anything over that seems a little too much.

Just over 2 bills for mine.
35/20, the legal limit here in Tejas. My advice, go to a reputable shop that's been there for awhile, so if things go wrong, you got redress. How many cheap, f**ked up tints have you seen. Thank you.

Well, it depends on your location in the US bigtime. As far as some of these people saying that it only took 20 minutes, thats way too quick. I charge 235 for a 2 door all windows except windshield. I use FormulaOne window film which is made by CP Films, which is the same maker of Llumar. I have worked with Sun Gard, Johnson, and 3M. Out of all of them, FormulaOne is far more superior than any of these other films. Reason being, it comes with a guaranteed NO COLOR change warranty, as well as a scratch warranty: both are LIFETIME. This means that if you scratch it, break it, or anything that you can think of to f*ck the tint up, it will be retinted for no cost. As you can see by the cost of the southern state tinters, they are considerably cheaper. Their's people setting up tint tents in the parking lot of walmart and tinting outside, but HOW IN THE WHO CAN YOU TINT OUTSIDE WITHOUT HAVE A BEACH IN YOUR TINT!!! I am as **** as they come, and tint it to perfection, i take the door panels off and use a clamp to push the door pin in to roll the window completely up. Actually, on most cars i take the door glass out of the vehicle so it goes all the way to the edge w/o a gap. That's my 3.50 cents worth..........
