So if your gauge reads 30mpg in city driving you would trust it? There's also been stories (mine does it too) that when you're at 60mph on the highway, it will sometime read 99.9mpg. Would you trust this also?

I think what you can take away from this thread is that you cannot trust the gauge. Some people say 12 mpg while some people say 30 mpg and in your case some people say 3 mpg. The car is a gas guzzler for a V6 but it pumps out a fair amout of power. Also remember, newer car's will suck down more gas then one with 6K on it. It all comes down to this though, you bought a sports car, not an economy car.

If I knew that I had just reset it and had not been romping on it, but instead had been maintaining low rpm's, yes.

If it read 99.9, i'd reset it again, go for a new reading, if it still came out as 99.9 then no, I'd take it in and *****.

But overall, I would trust the gauge over my own calculations, unless I was able to verify the true amount of gas I used.

Let's use my drag strip example again, but in reverse. Let say I had a full tank, highwayed it to the track, got 25mpg on the way there and used 3/4 of a tank, then raced it without reseting the meter. the avg would drop only slightly say to about 23mpg, even though I know for a fact that during high performance running it only gets about 12mpg. This doesn't mean I get 23mpg at the track.

Basically, what I'm trying to get at is that the gauge is only good for either overall mpg metering for a full tank, or specifically metered runs. Anything else, and the reading will be skewed.

Ok, I reset it and it got to a peak of 17.. But that was the least of my wories today.. I blew a tire going 45 and almost crashed.. Thankfully, nobody was on the road to interfere.. Its in the shop, and getting 4 new Pirelli P-Zero's. The rim cracked and my grand total quote for damages was 2K :-(

Hahahahahah! How do people like you get to drive sports cars?

I wonder if anyone here with mostly highway driving (or a long trip), that's getting constant 26+ MPG, and then they did the math at the gas station to find out the true MPG and compare it to the guages...

14.3mpg / 23mph avg.

Living in Orange County does not help either.. Can't get above 27mph avg and it's hard not to step down on the gas pedal every once in a while...

With the mods I have, and running as rich as I do, I thought I had a fuel leak... Instead we filled up and calculated 8-10mpg..... Soon to be fixed

Stock Z's should get 20-26mpg. If you step on it the mileage goes down fairly fast. I avg right at 25mpg. If I step on it it to get on the freeway instead of merging slowly and squeezing the pedal, it drops to around the 23mpg. I can get as high as 29.9mpg on long freeway trips of hundreds of miles. I still have yet to break that 30mpg mark.

Everything on my car is stock motor wise except:

Popcharger
Iradium Plugs
Synthetic Oil
Grounding wires

I run the tires at the recommended 35psi for long trips and 34ft / 32rear for around town during the week.

I used to think my LS1 Firebird got better hwy mileage at 28.5mpg with the double overdrive 6 spd. However, now I have proven the Z gets better mileage to myself.
Around town the F-Bird get 18mpg at best. The Z can still get at least 23mpg in town and stop and go generally. Needless to say most of my commute duties have gone to my Z lately. That's not a bad thing.
