Default How does Nissan get away with publishing those HP and TQ numbers for the Z?

Hey, folks, I have an 03 Touring and I've read many thread re: people dynoing their Z and getting returns of roughly 230-240 hp and similar numbers for tq. How does Nissan get away with this? 230 hp is a big divergence from the 287 hp that they claim.

I'm interested in this because I remember a few years back, Ford got in trouble for overestimating the hp and tq for the Mustang Cobra (03 or 04 model, I think). If I'm not mistaken, Ford actually skipped the next model year and recalled the Cobras in question to install better headers, exhausts, etc., the get closer to the published numbers. I wonder if the same could be done for the Z...

Because 230-240 hp is at the wheels, including something called drivetrain loss. The 287/300hp they publish is at the crank, which is the engine.

The 287 and 300 HP numbers they tout are at the engine. All manufacturers use the engine output number, not the wheel horsepower number. At least they don't lie like Mazda did with the RX8 and put out inflated numbers. I think they had to buy the cars back or issue partial refunds for that.

(crank)287-(drive train loss)15%=(wheel HP)243hp
(crank)287-(drive train loss)18%=(wheel HP)235hp

Theres your figures you most likely see.

Now it's coming back to me, I remember reading about engine hp vs. wheel hp and I totally forgot the distinction. Sorry for the noobie question.

Some manufacturers such as Mazda ACTUALLY lie though!

They apologized to customers after the loss was 30%.

Mazda RX-8's are slow.

You didn't hear about that? Mazda told a big one when they released the new rx-8. They overshot the HP quite a bit... enough to bring legal action against them. Basically what kpiskin was talking about.

Not to mention it has the "R" in its name -- anyone into the JDM scene knows anything with an "R" letter is good for at least an additional 20hp and is JDM-tight.

The new Civic Si (despite the glaring lack of the R in it's name) is rated at 200hp at the crank but I've seen stock dynos putting down 195 hp to the wheels. So, here we have a manufacturer whose being conservative on power output estimates. - most likely to keep from stepping on the toes of the RSX Type-S.

Those new Si's are no joke, I saw one in person on a dyno with intake and header put down 190whp 145wtq

Oh right! Thank Honda for the 2.5% drivetrain loss

It's not like it's 'efficient drivetrain-loss,' they are simply understating crank-hp.

Correction: The new Civic SI is rated at 197 at the crank. In stock form you will not hit those numbers unless you're on drugs or your dyno is flat out wrong. Sorry... but that's so bull**** I can almost smell it over here.

Quick Reply: How does Nissan get away with publishing those HP and TQ numbers for the Z?
