A really important piece of information to know about USAA auto insurance:

USAA has two "divisions", USAA General Insurance and USAA Casualty (CIC), or something similar, and their rates can vary widely. If you are under 25, you are (or used to be) automatically placed in the CIC pool, with the corespondingly higher rates. USAA was not affordable for me until AFTER I was 25 and married. When you shop their rates, ask them this distinction, and see if you can get into the other "pool".

I check every two years or so (still moving too often) and USAA is either the lowest or within $50/year, with an integrity and customer service attitude that can not be beat. Factor in the possible rebates, and for most folks in the lower risk pool, they are the better value.

Of course, YMMV!

I've had my auto & home insurance with USAA for almost 20 years and by far, they have the most affordable rate. For example, I checked Progressive just this morning and compared my current policies on three of my vehicles. I made sure they are exactly alike and Progressive came up much higher, especially on my 2006 Z.

Here's what I found out a few years ago from USAA on how they quote your car insurance. The cost is also dependent on where you live. The insurance industry has ratings for each city -- certain cities are rated higher than others. If your city is rated closer to 1, your rates will be higher. I think it is based on several factors -- cities are rated higher than rural areas, for example. The rural area where I live is rated 53 -- my monthly insurance payment on my Z is $45 (comprehensive).

Auto Insurance companies are now checking your credit score when giving you a quote. Try "googling" or "yahoo search" and you'll find some more info.

On some insurance policies, the ratings are on the paperwork but they are normally "coded" so you'll have to know what you're looking for. You may have to call you insurance company and find out what the rating is for where you live. I am almost certain that these ratings are based on "risks" involved in certain areas, which is why certain cities are rated higher than others.

I pay $928/6 months for about the middle amount of coverage, not the max, not the minimum. I just turned 21. Is there a different rate between civillian and military, because I am military. I haven't shopped around for insurance, but I thought I was getting a good deal. Lww, since you work for them, can you tell me if what I get is good?

All insurance companies are that way, they are called markets, not pools. Progressive has four of them. USAA has two, etc.. when they say for instance that a comprehensive claim will not raise your rates, they are right. A high claim will not directly raise your rates. It might move you to a different market, say from a preferred to a standard, and that will raise your rates. Markets are variable and most companies have a policy to not discuss them. If you can interperet the code on your policy info, you can tell though. With USAA you are either in CIC or GIC market. Also, every insurance company uses consumer reporting, and zip codes to alter rates. One zip code in the same city may be quite higher than another for crime and theft reasons, etc..

I saved $600 a year moving my zip from 18324 (bushkill, pa) - in the woods to 16801 (state college, pa) - Penn State University park. I would think moving from the woods to a populated college town would have increased my rate instead of lower it.
