Default All This Talk About Clutches.....

Im just wondering...how do you know your clutch is slipping or your clutch/flywheel needs to be replaced?

I have driven manual tranny cars for a while and never had a clutch or anything involved with the transmission break on me. My Z is running strong, no problems with the tranny (sometimes hard to get into gear when its cold but thats normal)

A while ago I felt like a rebel and decided to try to "peel out" and I def burned my clutch since there was a really bad smell. After that I promised myself never again.

Im wondering out of curiosity... how do you know your clutch is in need to be replaced? Will your car jerk while you are driving normally? Will your RPM's be screwed up?

Thanks

when the clutch slips you will notice that the gear doesnt "engage" fully. when you are in gear and you let go of the clutch, the engine will rev for a little bit and then "bite". thats when you know you need a new clutch.

When you engage the clutch, the car does not move.

or

The clutch is always engaged. Which isn't too bad because you can start the car in first gear. Just make sure nothing is in front of you.

When I'm coming to a stop and depress the clutch to
put it into neutral, the rev goes up like 500rpm for a second before dropping to proper idle.
Is that normal? Just curious.

Put the car up against a solid object (with some sort of padding if you want). Engage a high gear (5th or 6th) and slowly let out the clutch pedal. If the car stalls you're ok, if the car doesn't stall and the clutch pedal comes all the way out, your clutch is worn.

I would recommend against trying something like this. If you can't tell your clutch is worn from driving it..... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've heard some people say that if you don't stall every now and again you're using too much clutch.

yes. the flywheel momentum keeps the crank spinning for that brief period
