Default something weird happened today...

i had about 57 miles DTE on my trip computer, my gas gauge was a little bit lower that the 1/4 line and i just exited the freeway. when i got to a stoplight, i saw my gas gauge go down dramatically and soon enough my gas light goes on. then i checked my DTE and it blinked 0. this has never happened before. then the DTE started to go up slightly, and then it reached a final reading of 44 DTE after about 5 mins. has this happened to anyone?

The DTE guage is a good indicator of how far you can go at your current rate of speed, etc. but it is by no means exact. I've had mine go from 45mpg when cruising at 65, exit highway to backroad and romp on it a little, and the gauge goes to --- after a minute or two...

Good thing you can drive on --- for at least 20-40 miles...

The load on the engine & the throttle position affect it too, not just current speed. 65mph down a hill takes a lot less gas than 65 up a hill.

Right when it reads --- you have 3 gallons left, so that is plenty of gas to make it to a gas station. You could drive 80 miles on the highway before you ran out of gas. I wouldn't push it though.

Do you have empirical data to back up that statement?
