So I was going to go out tonight..coasted down my driveway. And then as I accelerated, it bucked and decelerated mightily. Tried in second. Third. Same thing. Wierd, mothball like smell coming from the exhaust, and the idle seemed fine until massive, random drops.

What the hell is going on?! Is it condensation in the tank? Is it the popcharger? (that i've had on for about 1K). Was it the oil change 2 days ago (a place i've gotten it at changed at before)?

Lemme rephrase that... can you repeat the question... in a way that makes more sense? I'm not getting much information from your post. Just bucking and rpm drop... that doesn't tell me a lot.

 

ok update: I drove it and it worked. WTF? Didn't touch anything...after that I tightened everything up and it still worked. I am absolutely miffed...should I take it in?

 

Well I had bucking at exactly 2500 RPM, and deceleration b/c of that. Then a wierd smell in the engine.

It works now..and after it worked I retightened everything. Do these things come off easily or what?! I'm not sure what it is (if it was the popcharger off or what), but i'd certainly love to prevent it again.

 

Sounds like you are in limp mode have you set a check engine light? I would try resetting your ECU

 

No lights at all, which is what really confused me. Should I take it to the dealer in the morning, even though it appears to be working fine? Im worried that there is something in the gas..Wawa is known to be horrendous with gas quality (Wawa=local chain)..and then there is condensation..damn weather.

 

Under warranty yeah take it in let them deal with it. Still think there was a MAF code set as a result of the pop charger.

Ummmm...you might want to step back and think this out first!
What other mods do you have done to your Z? More info is needed about your car before we ccan help! And if the intake is your only mod then you might want to swap out the pop charger for the oem intake setup for "warranty" reasons before you take it in man!

Yeah I agree if this is the only MOD you have. I have had several experiances while tuning were a trouble code was not set but ECU would go into Limp mode sounds crazy I know.
I would first reset Ecu and see if it goes away or sets the SES light

 

Well there were no lights at all..and I just ran her again and theres no problems. I'll d/c the battery for the night. Hopefully she works in the morning?

And what exactly is "limp" mode?

 

Saftey programmed into the Ecu when ever something is out of range of one of it's sensors or is not operating properly the ECU goes into a saftey or Limp mode limiting revs to 2500rpm

 

are you able to get past 2500 rpms? or does the engine not go any higher then that speed?

if the car is just bucking at all ranges of engine speed (including idle), I'd do a quick check your plugs and spark plug wires, you might be running on less then 6 cylinders

 

Nah, it was only at 2500 RPMs. But now it's fine. I think i'll let it be for the weekend. If anything fishy comes up, i'll take it in. Thanks guys!

 

hey, mine seems to be doing the exact same thing that you mentioned.....it smell of complete **** when it happened too. My situation happened when I took the car to the body shop (on a trailer). The car was running perfectly fine beforehand, and when I got it back, it wouldnt rev up for ****. The first few times I would crank it, it run for like 3 seconds and then go dead. Then I get it to run, and try to rev, and it wont go over 2500, and smells like fresh ****.

 

Hmm, I just dug this old thread up. My car did this yesterday morning after letting it sit over the weekend. It was in safe mode, and would not rev past 2500 rpm. After turning it off, then back on, it was fine.

WTF??! Is there Microsoft software running in our ECU's? They just boot up badly sometimes? lol
