Default Is the MPG guage accurate?

I drove ~ 65 miles in 40-45mph zones with traffic lights about every mile. It was actually tonight with no congestion on the roads. I took it real slow shifting right @ 2k RPM and cruising in 6th when I could. My guage was consistant at 29.2/29.3 MPG (avg 27 MPH) the whole time. I did notice my gas guage go down just sliiightly. Before I filled up my tank I would "hit" it from time to time and I was @ ~ 23MPG.

I personally think its kinda bad *** just cruising and getting near 30MPG with the Z, if the guage is accurate. Any of you guys find the guage accurate?

probably not.
The only TRUE way too tell is to, top off your tank, record exact milage, drive a bunch. Top off tank again, record exact milage & caculate TRUE milage.

new milage-old milage = total miles driven
divided by gallons of gas required to top off tank the 2nd time

= true mpg

You forgot to square root it.

I find it typically over-estimates by 0.5-1.2 MPG, but the DTE display usually underestimates by a lot (not exactly sure) how many miles you have left.

for me its usually off by 1-2mpg, sometimes more. Id rather do the math myself if I want to see actual mpg

If you are conservative with your right foot, you can get better than 20mpg.

Mine has been pretty accurate. A little over a week ago, I filled up the tank all the way, and reset the trip odometer and the mpg calculator. Yesterday, I filled the tank back up and recorded the # of gallons used, the miles on the trip odometer, and the mpg on the gauge. Here is what it broke down to:

MPG shown on gauge: 18.5
Miles driven: 312.9
Gallons filled: 16.931
Actual MPG: 18.48

So, yes it is pretty accurate.

just reset your trip meter every time you refill, and each time you refill, divide the number of miles on your trip meter by the amount of gallon in your fill up, and you have actual MPG

Yeah I thought I was a badass economy driver too when that was happening for me, I was actually hitting 34+mpg because I would coast out of gear when I could.
I normally get 27-28mpg on the highway according to that guage and 19-20 in the city but when at the end of the tank I notice average 24mpg on all miles and an average of 40mph, doing the math when I drive 50mi on the interstate and 10 in the city each day doesnt add up.

I frequently check to see how accurate it is. Every time it is correct to the tenth decimal place. I was surprised at how accurate it is, cause my dad's Toyota 4-Runner has the same feature but the MPG estimate is off by about ~2.0

If you reset it everytime you get gas, its about +/- 0.3mpg.

Good to hear that the guage is pretty accurate for most of you. I do notice if i "hit" it from time to time it goes down, but driving properly again it goes up...dunno how accurate that is..but I wonder if anyone's gotten close to 450+ miles from 1 tank?

ive been on I-95 going 65 PMH (yeah i was one of the fe slow ones on there) and according to my digital MPG meter i was getting 36.3 MPG and i could verify at the pump that it was that good or mighty close.

Even when running in town i get about 25-26 MPG's avg. (gas tank verified).

I love my Z...gas mileage is very pleasing.

So who actually decides what MPG #'s go on the sticker of the car? If one drives 65MPH on the freeway and get's 36MPGs, why isn't 36 on the sticker? Just came across my mind..

im sure there is a standardized testing in the 1:1 gear ratio, rather than overdrive. In that case, any car company could add a very long 6th gear and get 40mpg out of a V8, as long as it put out enough torque to keep the car going at a certain speed
