If you are very competitive you will find yourself pushing the limits. Over your lifetime, you will exceed both your limits and the limits of physics. If you survive, you will learn to respect your environment and learn to accept an 8/10ths thrill experience. Some will call you an old fogey, but I would just call it life experience. It does not matter if it is a dirt bike, a street bike, a sports car, an airplane, a raft, a white water kayak or even taking your white water kayak to the ocean surf! So have fun, but try to be safe.

There are much worsE feeling than crashing your mommy and daddy's car.. Good thing you learned your lesson. And yes, it won't be that big of a deal for him in the future, but until then it'll be like hell.

He decided to chase the car that cut him off and he took the bait and it backfired.

Have you found out yet whether the insurance company is calling it totalled or not?
It's amazing what can be fixed, so maybe you'll have a driveable car out of it again after all the repairs. Hope so.
Philosophically, there is something to be said for learning to cope with major screw-ups like this. You've come out of it physically in one piece, hopefully you've had the scare of a lifetime, and you're going to pay the price in your insurance rates for the next few years.
That's the price life charges you for the lessons learned. Hopefully you won't do it again!
And about, oh, 25 years or so from now, when your 16 year old son is learning to drive - you'll have a heck of a story to tell!
