Default Sub dilemma...

I have done quite a bit of thinking about my planned system, and just yesterday, after totally gutting my Z of panels and interior, I decided to revamp my not yet installed system (again).

My original plans were to use the factory sub location to house a 10" JL10W6. Well, after ripping that area apart yesterday, I realize now that a 10W6 may be a tight squeeze in there, due to the angle of the metal baffle. Furthermore, its not hte greatest idea to mount a 10" sub 6 inches away from your listening area. Good sound systems always allow a little distance for a nice bass wave to develop, and that's why systems in the Z that have hatch mounted subs sound better than the ones in the factory location. Anyways, back to the crummy factory location...I doubt there is enough mounting depth for anything over a 10W3...too bad. Just for laughs, has anyone else seen the Bose wannabe 10" factory sub...what a piece of sh*t. THat things weighs about 6 ounces total ! It is by far the cheapest and poorest sub design I have seen to date. I have not looked into other factory sub designs, but this one is pretty bad.

Anyways, my new plans are to use the factory sub location to house my electronics...amps, EQ, power distribution, capacitor. The area is huge, and you could put alot of goodies in there if you designed the rack properly.

Here is where my question comes in...I want to install a custom box in the hatch to house 1 JL 10W6. However, I want this box to not take up much usable space, as I want to keep the space avaialble for golf clubs and any trips I have to make. Is anyone molding custom sub boxes for under the strut tower or for anywhere else in hte hatch that don't kill all of your space or make the hatch area worthless ? I have only sen one install in these forums so far that uses the small area in the left rear of the hatch for the enclosure. The design is great, but the cost was too much.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or feel like sharing any potential designs that conserve space, look great, and are somewaht cost effective ?

Well, you have a few options IMO...

If you absolutely have to stay with the JL 10", I would recomend removing the spare tire and build an enclosure that would allow you to replace the particla board/tire cover and carpet back over it. (It's somewhere on this forum, don't remember who did it).

OR, if you have any inclination of going to two JL 8's, I have only a few hours of work left in my boxes and will be posting pics by Sunday night. They are located behind both wheel wells and are truly custom fitted and formed from those places. Since it is such a small space, I doubt a 10 would fit.

My goal was the same as yours, golf clubs, photo gear, etc... This setup will work perfectly and the size boxes are perfect for the 8's.

A friend helped me make the molds but I have fiberglassed them and used mdf for the front mount area. I'll PM you when pics are up if you are interested in this kind of setup.

Lose the spare tire and get AAA. You can actually get 2 10's in the spare well if you wanted to.
