Default getting a new tranny...again

my car is getting another trasmission due to whinning noise and i was wondering if it's a good idea to have them change my tranny and diff. fluid to synthetic. Also is it true that Royal Purple is better when used in a warmer climate (i live in florida), compared to the Redline stuff?

hey Dresx240, I just had a new transmission put in 3 weeks ago and it's whinning as well. I guess I'm having the same problem. What did your dealership say the problem is? This whinning is driving me crazy!

I'm curious what this "whining" sounds like; in which gears and at what RPM?

i guess that the best way i can describe it is that it's similar to the noise that all manual cars make while going in reverse and then letting off the gas. On my car you could only hear it in first, second and a little in third when i let off the gas and let the rpms drop, but i'm sure it made the whinning noise in all the gears but it just got blocked by the wind. Also when downshifting at about 2500 rpm, especially in second it sounded like something was spooling up in the transmission.
As soon as i got my tranny installed i noticed the whining and i went back to the dealer, but i was told that it was normal and it will go away. That was in gainesville because that's where i go to school. Anyway, the noise never went away, but they didn't do anything about it. Well now i'm back home in ft. lauderdale and i had the dealership where i got the car from to take a look at it. It took pretty much every manager and senior mechanic in that place to drive my car in order for them to recognize that i have a problem. So they just told me that they're gonna order a new tranny.
I'm sure some sort of whine when letting off the gas and slowing down is normal on MT cars, but mine was so loud you could hear it a mile away.
Also can somebody answer my original question...i figure that it would be way easier to have them put the synthetic stuff in while everything is being taken apart, right? I plan on going by the dealership tomorrow morning to drop off the fluid.
thanks

Ah, I understand the whine now. Thanks for taking the time to explain to me and others. I'm sorry that you're having this unfortunate problem, and hopefully when they replace it it'll go away.

Best of luck!

I think its normal to have SOME whine, but nothing like the reverse gear whine. Thats ridiculous. Ive noticed my car whines in any gear, at or below 2k rpm when I get off the gas. Its not loud at all, but its there. That I think is normal. Try the new fluids too, Ive searched on tranny fluid and stuff, and it seems like a lot of people are saying good things about the royal purpe. Keep us posted!!

Good luck!

i just called the dealership and asked them if they can fill it up with synthetic fluid and the guy said no. Apparently that can void the warranty on the trasmission, according to him. Does that make any sense or is he just bs-ing me? I use synthetic for my regular motor oil and that doesn't matter to him..i assume that the benefits of using synthetic for the tranny are similar to using it for the engine...

I wouldnt belive that. If that were true then you could only use OEM nissan oil for everything to be covered unter warranty, and they obviously dont. I took my car for an oil change at the dealer and they put penzoil, (going synthetic from now on) so why woulnt that void the warranty? I think Hes BS-ing you.

If not NISSAN stuff, the service manual requires that you use API GL-4,Viscosity SAE 75W-85 or 75W-90. Does Royal Purple fit in this category?

I have never heard of a correlation between Royal Purple and warmer climates, good luck with the tranny.

i know they make a gl4 and gl5 version, and from what Ive read, gl5 will cause the syncros to decay or something. Im pretty sure they make it in different viscosities, but not if its those exact ones.

the whinning was in first, second and a little in third...never in neutral since the gears aren't really doing anything when tranny is disengaged...
