Do I think that I'm going to die now that I dont have them? Nope. Every other car I've owned did not have them.
I've even been in an accident (not the driver) and went through the windshield (just took off seat belt to get my wallet out), and I lived. Yes, they are probably a good idea and make sense to have...but I wouldnt make a big deal about them.

The side air bags would be nice to have if you wanted the added safety and didn't mind the extra weight. Especially on public roads. There are so many terrible drivers out there it's not even funny. One thing that is funny though, race cars which are designed to see speeds of around 200mph don't have airbags. I guess your average soccer mom can't live with a full race spec roll cage and a 6 point harness.
Keep in mind folks, just because you have side air bags doesn't mean you are invulnerable and you can't be killed in a car wreck.... your odds just go down, VERY slightly. Don't think you are 10 times safer just because you have air-bags - it would suck to find out otherwise the hard way.

Umm, race car drivers have this thing called hellmets and restrictive racing harness.
