Pay attention when you are driving and try to get used to what rpm will get you be at in different gears for the same speed.

wow I can't believe I missed this thread with my smarta$$ long story replies...

but I guess it's a good thing.

Anyways downshifting is all about getting used to driving ANY manual transmission vehicle. No one can tell you at what speed to shift to what gear at what rpm...every car is different. But once you have enough driving time under your belt, you'll know what I'm talking about and have a FEEL for the rpms.

Suggestion. Practice at low speeds and rpms and work your way up. Get the feel of it. Practice makes perfect. This way, you won't have any doubts and in no time after several or (numerous) practices you'll get the feel of it and won't mess up anything. Everybody is a different individual and takes time in their own to learn. Just take your time and practice. my .02 worth (And I had to borrow the 02.)

Hey I'm sorry I was rough earlier. This is a very good question. Downshifting is quite difficult. I heard that braking while downshifting is very good.

Down shifting is like shifting up, just in the opposite direction. I'd say that about sums it up.

If you are just stopping, I think you just step on the brake, and put it in a lower gear without blipping throttle.
This is the correct way, Hidehide has it right. There are some excellent old posts on heel and toeing, some with pictures, check it out on the search. Take your time, the Z is long term lesson.

Actually the last part of that is not correct.

Clutch braking is bad news.

related question....if you don't rev-match to downshift, but instead, downshift, and slowly releasing the clutch without giving any gas and let the RPM match up smoothly, does that do any damage to your tranny??

no, unless your RPM's are already higher than what the previous gear can handle

I see a prematurely worn clutch in your future.
