All cars exerience a little power loss when running the A/C. However, the more powerful the engine the less likely you'll notice it. This is one of the reasons I bought a Z.
You should try driving a 10 year old Miata. Turning on the A/C is like dragging an anchor!
I can feel the difference changing the AC on to off with 505whp...
you can frigin feel the difference... and keep the stock pulley or go with UR ONLY!!! NO KJR!!! They will eat your crank and cost you at least AT THE LEAST!!! 6k to pull the engine out of the car pretty much...
My car feels slower with A/C on. Anyone knows why?
When my dad was giving me some driving lessons on the freeway, long ago, he showed me that effect in our Ford Aerostar. At 65mph he turned the AC on, and the van slowed down about 3mph, which is 4.6% reduction in speed (and presumably hp to the wheels). Assuming that translates to the Z, that's a 14hp loss. (300 x .954= 286)
So yes, you do lose power when you use your AC. Which is why it reduces your fuel efficiency; we drive the same speed, but need more fuel to maintain that speed and extra power drain.

I know that under WOT some vehicles shutdown the compressor electronically. Never certain whether the Z does this but I thought Infiniti has ventured before.

+1 I heard the 300zx did that I was wondering if the 350Z did it as well...
