saving gas?

Refilled today with 16.776 and got 511 miles. I'll say I drove maybe 30-40 miles freeway (few hard runs) and d!cked around in the city several times. Today I reset it and drove in the city, with a stoplight every mile, and some areas several lights every mile. In 6th when I reset it, driving ~ 43mph in 6th it reported 34 mpgs, but anyways, after 10 more miles it settled to 30.6. Upon entering downtown where 1-2, 1-2-3 was common, it dropped to 28. Back in the city after 4-5 miles it went back up to 30.2 or so, and that's where I am now. This guage is pretty accurate; just can't wait for it to settle down and start averaging after 50 more miles.
I don't have any more nerves to get 30mpg for the whole tank. I'll be nice for the next 100 miles and mess around, and end up averaging 26mpg or around 4xx miles.
Accelerate slowly up to and shift at 2k RPM, and when you see a red light ahead, let it coast
Reset it and just drive like this 10 miles, you'll get the same result.
Ok I'm lame that I took a pic, which contradicts my "30.2" lol, but I promise to get there tomorrow lol.

Just filled her up today. And i'm damn suprised! 472 miles on 16.428 gallons, and I drove it hard at times, and about 30 miles just driving in 3rd messing around. All but ~ 30 miles were city driven. I don't WOT it daily, but I have no damn idea how Nissan advertises 19 in the city. I might get 19 if i used nothing but 3rd throughout.
to save gas, what rpm do you shift it out of 1st? most gears i shift around 2K, if i'm trying to save the gas, but in 1st if I shift at 2K, i seem to get slowed down too much, b/c at 2k the speed is very low and the 1-2 shift seems to take a bit longer to make it smooth
I agree with you. 1st I take up to maybe 2200 and try to shift into 2nd smoothly; only problem is if there's people behind me its tough because I make a really long pause...the stock clutch takes forever for the revs to drop.
again people, please go buy a corolla if you are looking for fuel efficiency....when I enter the freeway, I like to roll down my windows and hit redline everytime just so I can hear my car growl...I have never hit 20mpg in my car and i've accepted that about my car...
I bought my car so I can have some fun driving....on a cold morning, I like to take my car out for a cruise and stop at all the red lights just so I can take off and hear my engine roar again...i don't take off racing...just driving normal, but I like to hit the higher RPMs just to hear the sound of my car....

Wow this guy is on crack for the most of his write up. As I have test most of it all on something that drinks more than any of your vehicles. A 95 Explorer… first lets go with
How in the world. All these items pull energy from the battery which is kept charged by the Alternator. An alternator puts out the same amount, it doesn’t just magically come off the belt and shut off. And cruise control will improve your gas mileage if its safe to use it. You go up and down on the gas much more crudely than the computer does. I seriously hope no one just kills the whole electrical system when they drive. Music I can see but that’s because its can effect our mode, but that’s it.
So to find this one out, last summer I went to see what was the best MPG I could get out of my truck. I opted for summer because the engine has a chance to warm up, please keep in mind this is dallas.
So windows up, A/C off for 2 months regardless of the heat. Most of those days the inside of the car hit 150+. I had water, and ice so for the most part it was all good for me. My MPG went from 15-16 to 21-22 combined city(80%)/highway(20%). So this was a huge improvement, so the next test was putting on the A/C only during highway driving and shutting it down in city. Guess what the milesage was… 21-22mpg. So the A/C myth only works in the city. So finely wanted to see if windows down @ 40mph or lower was better than A/C. Well it turns out that windows down was better. Not as good as up, but better than A/C.
After this good 7 months of pure testing on my own, I learned A/C is great and to use it daily. Sure I saved some MPG, but at what cost to my self.
Ok, I have an auto, and my car runs at a lower RPM in drive than in Neutral. Now granted when I tried this test I found it more annoying and didn’t see any improvement or de-improvement so it was void. Also at a stop how is holding the brake going to help? No friction is being applied, just pressure and light pressure at that. It may save you one day over a period of 7 years?
hmm, ive parked in steep places. Granted not many around here. This test was done in CO. But the rpms for reverse and forward where the same to get out. Normally I idle out, and going forward or backward in the first gear at least for my truck is the same as well as any car I ever drove.
Now for the gas thing, must of ya have that covered. The whole idea that a pump turns on is funny. The pump is on at all times and in mine it takes from the near bottom of the tank, so full and 1/8 of a tank is still the same. I filled up for 4 gallons and got the same as filling up with 16 gallons. Apparently with at least a truck it doesn’t seem to have that much of a factor. I bet me losing weight would have more of a factor in the long run than filling up ľ a tank.
Well it was a rant I know, and im sure 90% of the people on this forum already know this. I just had to rant, its been a bad 4 days costing 5k of my own money that’s not insured(1 notebook, and 3 computers dead).
All electronics will also hurt your fuel economy such as defrosters, heated seats, the heater, and cruise control.
But even worse, worse than all of the electronics combined is the air-conditioning. The A/C system hurts your mileage by a whopping 20%. So, if you’re driving a tyical Honda Civic and you’re doing 36 mpg, turn on the air conditioning and you’ll be doing 30!

While sitting at a red light, put your car into neutral and take your foot off the brakes, unless you’re on an incline. Surprisingly this will save gas because your car doesn’t have to put that extra oomph into holding the brakes for you, it will also give your brake discs a longer life.
What I mean by this is, the reverse gear is bigger and requires more fuel than your initial forward gear, so park planning to go forward if you can.

i get 25 in town and 34-35 on the highway doing 75-80. i run 93 octane with octane booster. i normally get 400+ to a tank of gas and run my car pretty hard. these cars aren't that hard on gas if you don't floor it everytime and tach it out in every gear. my friend at work has a new 06 civic and gets the exact same gas mileage i do.
I really don't understand how people are getting above 30 MPG freeway driving between 75 and 80 mph, and I've seen it reported numerous times. For work I often make a 1 hour drive on the turnpike where I am driving between 75 and 80 mph with cruise control, and with minimal speed variation or lane changes. I have never seen more than high 26's on the mpg meter, and I verified the gauge's readout by refueling while I was still on the turnpike and calculating it by hand. No air conditioning, and windows were only slightly cracked. It baffles me.
ive been getting 15mpg mostly city driving but i always shift around 2/2.5k. i never use the ac but always have the windows down. maybe i should try shifting at 4k like they say. any suggestions?
